The “famous” Delmonico was just okay. It was a thick cut and cooked perfectly, but it really lacked flavor. The Caesar salad was very good and one of the highlights of the meal. The menu has several other dishes that look worth trying, so I plan to come back for another visit.

Service was not great, but it seemed more like a staffing problem than the server’s fault. She was covering too many tables along with the patio, which made it hard for her to give consistent attention. With better staffing, the service would likely improve.

Overall, this felt like a 3.5 star experience. Some parts of the meal were enjoyable, others were underwhelming, but there is enough potential here that I am willing to give it another chance.

Update (October 2025):
I returned to The Gin Mill and had a much better experience. I ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu — it was very tasty, though slightly overcooked, which made it a bit dry and burned some of the breading. Thankfully, the cheese sauce saved it. The cup of French onion soup was delicious, the Caesar salad was once again excellent (fresh and clearly made with house dressing), and the twice-baked potato was very good.

Service was noticeably improved this time around — attentive and friendly without feeling rushed. Overall, this visit raised my impression of the place to a solid 4 stars. I can see the kitchen’s potential, and I’ll definitely be back again.

While visiting Decatur, Illinois, I had the pleasure of dining at The Gin Mill—a hidden gem that balances warm ambiance, attentive service, and a bold, satisfying menu.

We began with the fried calamari, delicately crisped and served with a sweet chili sauce that offered just the right touch of tangy and sweetness. It was easily one of the best starters I’ve had in recent memory—fresh, flavorful, and addictively good.

For the main course, I chose the Delmonico Ribeye steak, paired with roasted Brussels sprouts. The steak was outstanding—exceptionally tender and generously coated in rich cowboy butter, which added a decadent, smoky depth. It was the kind of steak you find yourself thinking about days later.

The house salad was the only minor misstep. While the balsamic vinaigrette was well-balanced, the red onions overwhelmed the dish, and the croutons, unfortunately, were overdone. That said, it was a small blemish in an otherwise stellar meal.

My wife opted for the shrimp street tacos, which were fresh and lively with flavor, alongside a salmon patty that was perfectly cooked—crispy on the outside and tender within.

From the food to the friendly service, The Gin Mill delivered a top-tier dining experience. It’s a spot that surprises and delights, and one I’d highly recommend to locals and visitors alike. A must-try in Decatur.

My first time here was great! My boyfriend suggested that we try it so we came after having dinner elsewhere, but before heading to the Vespers performance at Millikin. We wanted to have a drink and take a look at the dessert menu. The interior is sophisticated and stylish, although somewhat too brightly lit for my taste. I like it when places are more dimly lit, but that was a minor thing. Our drinks came pretty quicky and the bartenders were very welcoming and lovely. We ordered two things for dessert, but they took longer than we expected. However, once we got them, we were very happy and then headed to the show. My boyfriend says he wants to come back here to sit down and have dinner. Next time!

In Decatur, Illinois, a city known around the world as the famed birthplace of the Caesar Salad, the Gin Mill’s take on this beloved classic is divine. Situated in the heart of the picturesque downtown plaza of this quaint midwestern village, the Gin Mill presents finely chopped romaine tossed in a tangy dressing and dusted with exquisitely aged Parmesan and perfectly cracked black pepper, plated beautifully in a delicate handmade stone bowl. Truly, one is transported to Julius’s very own ancient Roman dining hall with every bite of this decadent salad. Whether you’re just traveling through the stunning corn fields of Central Illinois, or deciding where to take your next grand adventure, a trip to the Gin Mill for its Caesar Salad is surely bucket list-worthy.

Overall a nice atmosphere with friendly staff. Food was good but not great. Hawaiian burger had overwhelming taste of pineapple, a thinner slice may have helped it be more balanced. Bacon on burger was undercooked and a little soggy. Burger patty itself was very good as well as the Korean BBQ sauce. Truffle fries were also a little strong in flavor for my taste. Seems like a nicer upscale option for the area.

It was my husband and I’s 5 year anniversary. We couldn’t really go anywhere because of our obligations so we just settled for a nice dinner at a restaurant I’d been wanting to go to for a while. Everything was amazing from the appetizers to my drink . Our waitress was very good and we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly ❤️

I just had one of the best steaks I have ever had! My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and went to the Gin Mill for the first time.

Our server, Jessica, was so personable and attentive!

I ordered the 16oz Ribeye with asiago crust and garlic butter. It was so good, cooked to perfection (medium), flavorful, and juicy. The asparagus on the side was great as well. I had the Caesar Salad, which was meh. The dressing had a sweetness I didn’t care for and would have liked anchovy paste to add a little kick.

My wife had the Blackstone Filet, which was 2 x 4oz tenderloin filets with bordelaise sauce and mushrooms. It was a perfect medium rare and delicious. She did think the sauce was a little salty and we both preferred my ribeye. She got the brussel sprouts and house salad l, both of which were great. She also had lobster bisque, which she likes and I didn’t care for. We are from New England and are used to a different flavor, though. Maybe a little Old Bay seasoning.

We can’t wait to come back!!
