Service was not great, but it seemed more like a staffing problem than the server’s fault. She was covering too many tables along with the patio, which made it hard for her to give consistent attention. With better staffing, the service would likely improve.
Overall, this felt like a 3.5 star experience. Some parts of the meal were enjoyable, others were underwhelming, but there is enough potential here that I am willing to give it another chance.
Update (October 2025):
I returned to The Gin Mill and had a much better experience. I ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu — it was very tasty, though slightly overcooked, which made it a bit dry and burned some of the breading. Thankfully, the cheese sauce saved it. The cup of French onion soup was delicious, the Caesar salad was once again excellent (fresh and clearly made with house dressing), and the twice-baked potato was very good.
Service was noticeably improved this time around — attentive and friendly without feeling rushed. Overall, this visit raised my impression of the place to a solid 4 stars. I can see the kitchen’s potential, and I’ll definitely be back again.
We began with the fried calamari, delicately crisped and served with a sweet chili sauce that offered just the right touch of tangy and sweetness. It was easily one of the best starters I’ve had in recent memory—fresh, flavorful, and addictively good.
For the main course, I chose the Delmonico Ribeye steak, paired with roasted Brussels sprouts. The steak was outstanding—exceptionally tender and generously coated in rich cowboy butter, which added a decadent, smoky depth. It was the kind of steak you find yourself thinking about days later.
The house salad was the only minor misstep. While the balsamic vinaigrette was well-balanced, the red onions overwhelmed the dish, and the croutons, unfortunately, were overdone. That said, it was a small blemish in an otherwise stellar meal.
My wife opted for the shrimp street tacos, which were fresh and lively with flavor, alongside a salmon patty that was perfectly cooked—crispy on the outside and tender within.
From the food to the friendly service, The Gin Mill delivered a top-tier dining experience. It’s a spot that surprises and delights, and one I’d highly recommend to locals and visitors alike. A must-try in Decatur.
Our server, Jessica, was so personable and attentive!
I ordered the 16oz Ribeye with asiago crust and garlic butter. It was so good, cooked to perfection (medium), flavorful, and juicy. The asparagus on the side was great as well. I had the Caesar Salad, which was meh. The dressing had a sweetness I didn’t care for and would have liked anchovy paste to add a little kick.
My wife had the Blackstone Filet, which was 2 x 4oz tenderloin filets with bordelaise sauce and mushrooms. It was a perfect medium rare and delicious. She did think the sauce was a little salty and we both preferred my ribeye. She got the brussel sprouts and house salad l, both of which were great. She also had lobster bisque, which she likes and I didn’t care for. We are from New England and are used to a different flavor, though. Maybe a little Old Bay seasoning.
We can’t wait to come back!!
Delicious Food Updated: Had the Lamb Chops and Rasta Pasta. The Lamb Chops tasted so good and were so tender!
