The bartender behind the bar was unbelievably rude and completely unprofessional.
When I approached, he didn’t even bother to look at me properly — staring somewhere past me, answering in a dry, annoyed tone, as if I was interrupting his personal time. Every question I asked was met with some memorized phrases, delivered like he was doing me a huge favor. No politeness, no basic respect at all.
He looked totally checked out and indifferent to the guests: unfocused eyes, slow strange reactions, very odd behavior overall. Talking to him was extremely uncomfortable. Instead of explaining or helping, he spoke in a condescending way, interrupted, rolled his eyes, sighed loudly, as if my presence alone was irritating him.
For a place that supposedly cares about its service, this is an absolute failure. One person behind the bar completely destroys the atmosphere. Service is at zero, and my desire to ever come back is also at zero.
I strongly do not recommend visiting this place. If the owner cares at all about the reputation of Fat Pete’s BBQ, they should take a very close look at this bartender. With this kind of attitude he is driving customers away and killing any motivation to return.
Collard greens and cole slaw were fabulous. The brisket was very tasty, but rather dry. It needs something to moisten it, or it needs to be monitored better wherever it’s stored for slicing.
Overall very happy. Would be absolutely incredible if the meat could be less dry.
I had the 2-meat combo with sliced brisket and spare ribs. Both were a bit dried out as if they were under heat lamps too long. There was a white condiment in the bag that tasted like oil and paste. It looked like it was trying to be horseradish. It was expired or rancid and made me very nauseated when I tasted it. The side of coleslaw also tasted a bit old. I chose collard greens as a side and they were actually decent. I didn’t get any BBQ sauce on the meat or on the side. I am not sure if I needed to ask for it.
I ordered an extra side of Fried Green Tomatoes and they were unimpressive too. Both the tomatoes and the meat could have used a little salt.
The service was super nice and I loved the vibe of the restaurant. It looks like a fun place to catch a sports game as they had televisions on both levels.
As for me, I’m looking forward to finding that food truck again.
The menu was outright chaotic even though I knew exactly what I wanted to order. I had always loved the burnt ends from Pete’s. And then I wanted some type of brisket or burnt end sandwich, both of which were very hard to find on your new menu.
I kept trying to get the the waiter/ bartender’s attention but he was more interested in his phone. When he finally came over I could not get him to understand what I wanted even though I had ordered it 50 times before. I don’t know what happened to your restaurant but it is sad, and I don’t imagine myself coming back soon.
I didn’t even taste the food because when I saw how bad the service was I just canceled the order and left.
The bbq sauce caps were not put on and it soaked the bag and made a mess. They also did not include the baked beans, but that’s ok sometimes you forget food.
The real issue is the actual food. The pork belly bites were just fat, no actual meat or bacon. We threw them out after trying them because there was literally just fat. The burnt ends had flavor but were so burnt they could barely be cut with our steak knives. I chopped them with a butcher knife. I’m guessing they overbooked everything yesterday because the brisket was also over done and had zero smoke ring. It was moist but very over cooked. If it was done properly it would have been melt in your mouth delicious. It was likely a very off day.
The corn bread was perfection and the pulled pork was as expected. DC does not have good bbq, so if you’re craving Texas style bbq, Fat Pete’s is your best bet and to be honest, you won’t be disappointed. Once they figure out temperatures and when meat is done, they’re going to be amazing. The seasoning and flavor are there, it’s not learning meats, what to serve vs discard and when to stop cooking it.
Ohh the bacon wrapped jalapeño poppers were perfect. I loved them!!! Nicely done.
