Social Profile:

An exotic neighborhood escape, Beatnik offers Mediterranean cuisine, tropical cocktails, and global music in Chicago’s Loop. Named after the bohemian freethinkers of the 1950s and ’60s, Beatnik On The River channels the beatnik generation’s sense of style, aspiration and rebellion to create an exotic escape with maximalist interiors and lush gardens. Mirroring our design-through-storytelling whimsy, Beatnik’s culinary team takes guests on a globetrotting journey that starts in the Eastern Mediterranean, moves westward across Northern Africa and finishes across the Atlantic with the flavors of Mexico. Beatnik’s beverage team makes tropical cocktails that are savory and fresh, with inventive recipes that follow a no-waste sensibility.

Creative global eats and tropical cocktails, served in a funky-ornate setting with riverfront seats.

Me and my coworkers had the pleasure of going to beat Nick on the river and it was fantastic. When you first walked in it was very colorful. After you take a turn down a hall and then down some steps it kind of feels like it’s a speakeasy. Then when you go downstairs, it opens up to what feels like a beautifully enchanting riverfront view that is wonderfully decorated. We decided our table for about 17 minutes before the server noticed us and brought us water. Which seemed a little bit off. Not sure what was going on. They took our order and we got a hummus dip and the baba ghanoush. It was fantastic. We also got the salmon and Crudo, which was a phenomenal. I got pictures of all of that however, when our food came, I forgot to take photos so I’ll just tell you. I got the ceviche. It was flavorful but a very small portion. One of my coworkers got a lamb skewer and said it was great one of my coworkers got the kale salad and she loved it. She said the salmon was wonderful. One of my coworkers got the short rib and I had a bite. The short rib was great, but oh my God the sweet potatoes were so memorable if I go again, I would definitely be getting that.

Pretty cool place. We came here for brunch. Great coffee. Mezze Board was delicious. Brunch was good, not a top CHI favorite. Staff was super friendly and has great views of the River and downtown Chicago.

This was an absolute awesome random find on my part. Just past 2p. Was hungry and looked up and saw Beatnik On the River …. Was met by wonderful staff and brought to a table on the river. Sara or Sarah introduced me to the very eclectic menu and my taste buds were so enjoying the selection. I knew it was a good choice when my 30 something daughter texted with “wow” good choice. Great setting great staff. I hope to come back again sometime.

Hear me out. Most places that are popular for their beautiful scenery or atmosphere tend to miss on the quality of their food, it’s never a hit on both scenery and food quality. However, this restaurant not only had the most beautiful interior and view of the river, but the food tasted delicious. My mom, sister, and I each got our own plates and I tried some food from their plates and every bite was truly delicious. We got the salmon eggs benedict, biscuits and gravy, and rib eye hash: 10/10!!! In addition, we went Jan 3 so it was definitely very cold outside, and the cold leaks into the restaurant because we are close to the windows. But the Beatnik would give bursts of heat that was perfect and would keep you warm, I wasn’t cold at all. Drinks at the bar were also delish, bartender was very funny!

Truly One of Chicago’s Most Magical Dining Experiences

Beatnik On The River is absolutely stunning — from the moment you walk in, you feel like you’ve stepped into a dreamy, bohemian oasis right on the water. The atmosphere is unforgettable: beautiful décor, gorgeous river views, and the perfect mix of music and energy.

The food is incredible! Every dish is packed with flavor and creativity. The Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences shine through in the best way. The cocktails are just as impressive — unique, refreshing, and beautifully presented.

Service is warm, attentive, and professional. The staff makes you feel welcomed and taken care of from start to finish.

We had a reservation and arrived right on time, but the experience started off awkwardly. The hostess didn’t even look up from her computer, sitting at the bar, and asked, “Can I help you?” in a way that made it feel like we were in the wrong place, not a restaurant that serves guests. When we said we had a reservation, the response was a skeptical “Oh yeah?” followed by “Okay, follow me then.”

The service didn’t really improve from there. Our server made a strange comment that people usually just order one salad and have business meetings here. No menu guidance, no recommendations. When I said we were ready to order and asked if he was ready to write it down, he said he’d remember everything. He didn’t. He had to come back and ask again.

The food was mixed. The lamb and halloumi were genuinely delicious, but the salad and hummus were pretty underwhelming and not very flavorful.

On a positive note, the ambiance is beautiful and the river view is great. Unfortunately, between the off-putting service and mediocre food, it didn’t live up to the hype or the price point.

Restaurant week 2026/lunch version 30$

Fantastic experience, food was extraordinary, lentil soup take me back to my childhood, hummus was very freash as the pita bread. Burger also was great, it just missed the fries which in no included, my husband loved the gyros! Is not like any others, this is pure shoulder lamb full of delicious fat and meat, no mixed. Cake was great and tasty as well, my only complaint is, even the service was great, I feel a bit rushed out and the end, even thy were dead.like very slow, anyway I really love the vibe, food, service.

I visited this place with a group of friends, and our experience was a bit of a mix. We started upstairs in the bar area while waiting for our reservation, and that part was fantastic. Abby, our bartender, was super friendly, welcoming, and even made a really nice spirit-free drink. The appetizers were good, and the atmosphere upstairs was great—if the whole evening was like that, it would’ve been an easy 5 stars.

When our table was ready, we were seated downstairs by the river. The views were beautiful, and the setting was lovely, but the service didn’t match what we experienced upstairs. Our server wasn’t very friendly and wearing sunglasses indoors felt odd. When we tried to order the same drinks we had upstairs, he told us they weren’t available. We asked if they could just bring them down, but got no real response. Later, after we had already ordered something else, those same drinks showed up from upstairs, which was confusing and frustrating.

The food was just okay—not terrible, but nothing that stood out. Most of us ordered different dishes and agreed it was average at best. I had wanted a steak, but was told I could only get it cooked medium rare, which I’d never heard of before. I ended up choosing a different cut that was more like a stew-style steak—not what I had in mind, and I didn’t finish it. On top of that, the music was way too loud, which made it hard to have a normal conversation at the table.

Overall, this place has a nice atmosphere and amazing staff upstairs (huge shoutout to Abby), but the food, service downstairs, and noise level left a lot to be desired.

We were a group of nine people and we were seated in their private dining room. The place is located right next to the river and it’s decorated really nicely. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and entrees. The kebab skewers were pretty good but my favorite was Branzino. Avocado hummus or beet moutabal didn’t have much taste, and pita bread was dry. Salads were pretty standard. We didn’t order any alcoholic beverages but the lemonades and coconut water were good.

Beatnik on the River has a great atmosphere, and I took my daughter so she could enjoy a beautiful restaurant setting. The ambiance was lovely. Our first server was very nice and pleasant, and other staff members were attentive, promptly clearing dishes and being very accommodating. Unfortunately, when servers were switched, the service was not great. When the second server brought the bill, it was dropped off abruptly without any interaction, which felt unwelcoming. The food was okay overall.
