We came during the last few days of Dine Out 2026, and opted for the cheaper $45 per person menu. There was also a $130 for 2 people option where you notably would get a wagyu ribeye with wafu ponzu marinade. They were also offering various Valentine’s Day combos already.

Miso soup had a rich umami taste, and contained plenty of tofu chunks/seaweed.

The Spicy Tuna Volcano had a crispy rice exterior with grinded tuna bits on top. Wasn’t a big fan of this. Rice immediately on the outside was crispy, but the rice grains immediately underneath the outermost layer were still soft/slightly gooey which threw me off. Didn’t really like the texture of the tuna on top either.

Fried Cheese Wontons & Pork Gyozas were pretty standard. Takoyaki were done well.

The zucchini were naturally sweet, and we also fancied the sauce they spread on top. On the other hand, the corn with butter was way too salty/greasy. Wished we just got 2 zucchini instead.

The Vancouver Set:

(5/5) Toro Beef (Garlic) – Our favourite cut! Loved the marinade, cut thinly, and was very tender after grilling.

(4/5) Harami Skirt Steak (Shio) – Meat had really good marbling, but maybe because they were served a bit on the thicker side, it was harder to chew through than the toro beef.

(3/5) Pork Belly (Garlic) – OK, but definitely had better-flavoured pork belly before.

The Richmond Set:
(3/5) Premium Sirloin (Shio) – Quite surprised that there was barely any flavour on the pieces we had. Had to dip it in a sweet sauce that was already provided on the table to supplement the lack of taste.

(3.5/5) Pork Shoulder (Garlic) – Not very memorable.

(4/5) Yaki-Shabu Beef (Miso) – Texture was similar to the toro beef, but a little less fatty. Liked this too!

They ran out of vanilla/green tea ice cream, and only had bubble gum/lychee flavour. We chose lychee. Ice cream was icy and artificially sweet. Interesting to find little bits of lychee jelly chunks in it though.

Servers and managers were all very friendly, patient, and helpful. On a busy Saturday, our wait was around 15 min even with a reservation. Overall, dining at Gyu-kaku was a good experience, and would come back again to try their other combos/lunch deals.

Great Japanese bbq place with tons of food options. A good place for a social gathering where you can cook your meal slowly and socially. We got the holiday combo for 3 people and it was very filling (didn’t even eat all of it). Would recommend their flank steak, basil chicken and edamame. Tons of different beef options but the best price point is to get a combo. Most combos come with miso soup and rice in addition to a bunch of sides which were all very tasty. Make sure to arrive hungry if you go. We will definetly be coming back.

Excellent service and great environment. Meat was delicious, had a few garlic noodles that were rough in texture but overall good. Fried chicken was tasty, specifically the chipotle aioli that comes with it.

Update: I came here a 2nd time and the quality was notably better. Well done!

I considered this one of the OG spots now. I’m sad they removed horumon from their menu since long long ago but I still enjoy their other offerings.

I generally have good experiences here even if wait time can be long sometime. I just learn to make reservation ahead of time now.

I only ever recalled one bad experience, a few years ago where this one staff kept turning off my grill when I still have raw meat on my table and again when I haven’t grill my s’more yet! She was rather rude and kept walking by, turn off, and left… Without saying anything.

That being said, today’s experience was great.
Food was a bit slow (or I was really hungry, lol) but everything was good. Our host, Perry, was hospitable and efficient. Despite it being really busy today, she always come by to check if everything was good and if we needed more water or tea.

I barely took any photo since I was hungry lol.

Quick service, no wait time at all despite how delicious and affordable Gyu-Kaku is! I come here often with family and this is one of the first places I recommend to people visiting Richmond. There is so much variety of mouth-watering meats (and other options). Service is also good, and there is lots of free parking. I always leave with my belly full and happy!

This was our first time there and the food and service was great. All the ingredients were fresh and very well seasoned. We ordered the Chefs Choice combo and we were both stuffed by the time we were done.
On the downside, parking is horrible. They share their parking with other businesses in the complex and we literally drove around in circles for 15 mins waiting for someone to leave so we could park.

They offer poor-quality meat for BBQ. With the all-you-can-eat menu, both quality and service decline. The restaurant is in need of renovation and isn’t a recommended place to try.

BBQ meats are good(ordered 3pax deal) . We ordered 2 bimbimbap never came until we ask for it. It was served in a regular bowl instead traditional stone bowl. Good location.

Have been coming here for years and always enjoyed the food and experience. It was our first time here for a birthday and really appreciate our server Soman for treating our birthday girl to a special dessert. The food is consistently good and we will keep coming back. EIIEG

Friendly staff, ample seating and tasty Japanese bbq grilled meats with lots of selection for side dishes. Grill your own or order the delicious cooked menu items. Lunch combo specials offer greater value but happy hour menu items offer some savings too. Quieter at non peak hours.
