I only gave atmosphere a 3 star because we didn’t actually go to the restaurant. We ordered off Uber eats our first night in playa due to arriving at 830pm from the airport. But needless to say it did not disappoint. Amazing crust, fresh salad, little herb baggies of oregano and chili flakas too and you get some homemade bread. All super fresh and super tasty to set the bar high for our week in playa.

We visit Playa del Carmen often and love discovering new spots, so we gave Don Mario’s a second chance after a forgettable visit a few years ago. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to expectations this time either.

The restaurant was busy, and we were seated quickly, which was great. However, our waiter came across as rushed and unfriendly—responses to questions were curt yes/no answers with little warmth or helpfulness.

We ordered calamari (with marinara), prosciutto pizza, spaghetti Bolognese, and carbonara. The complimentary bread they serve was stale and cold.

• The calamari was tough with a very small portion for the price. The accompanying marinara was unexpectedly spicy, which made it unsuitable for our 5-year-old. We had to ask the manager for a mild version as our waiter was nowhere to be found.

• The pizza advertised prosciutto, but it was prosciutto cotto (cooked ham) rather than the traditional cured prosciutto crudo—felt a bit misleading for an Italian spot.

• Spaghetti Bolognese was okay but very light on meat.

• The carbonara was the biggest disappointment: the sauce turned thick and cakey as it cooled, and what was supposed to be pancetta/bacon included large chunks of ham and noticeable fat pieces.

When I pointed it out, the waiter dismissed it casually (“that’s how Italians do it”), which didn’t match authentic carbonara standards.

Overall, the food felt more like a mid-tier chain experience (think Olive Garden level) but at significantly higher prices—easily our most expensive casual dinner in Playa so far. Service and quality didn’t justify the cost.

Our waiter never checked on us once, he was busy mooching all the tables that ordered alcohol.

If you’re craving solid Italian in Playa, we’d recommend trying Romeo’s Trattoria instead—the food and service there are consistently much better based on our experiences and what we’ve heard.

1 star (for the quick seating and busy vibe), but sadly not a place we’ll return to.

The pasta and service here are outstanding!! I live in Vancouver and find it hard to eat some good pasta, so this place made me very happy! Extremely tasty and not heavy. Great prices and our server (I can’t remember his name but he’s from Bacalar) was a sweet and friendly guy – cheers to him!

Very good , I had the ravioli in sage/butter with ricotta filling, excellent and my spouse ordered the fresh pasta spaghetti . You get bread to start, olive oil and balsamic, we ordered a mixed salad which was good- shaved carrot, cucumber, lettuce, olives, onions. Good portions, prices reasonable and nice ambience.

Great place, great food. Been here twice now. Staff are very friendly, no pressure, just the right balance (in my view). Food order is taken in good time, as is the delivery. Quality and quantity is great, and prices quite reasonable too. Will be going back, for sure.

Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The pizza and the risotto was really well made and tasted absolutely fabulous. We made multiple visits. Recommend making reservations to avoid a wait

This is one of the best Italian restaurants I’ve ever been to. The food and service were perfect. It was surprising to find such high quality Italian food on our trip to Mexico. The the sausage pizza was amazing.

Went here with a friend. We were sat down, offered menus and not approached again until we set the menus down and closed them.

Our orders were taken and then a minutes or so later a basket of warm breads was placed on the table. The olive oil and balsamic vinegar at the table were very good.

She had the Mushroom Sauce Pasta and I had the Fettuccine Alfredo.

Bother dishes were excellent, not over sauced, pasta was perfectly al dente.

Wait staff were attentive, but not hovering like in the US. You have to ask for your check.

We actually stayed a good 25 minutes AFTER we were finished eating and paying the bill to just chat. Not once were we made to feel like we must leave since our meal was over.

Try Don Mario’s if you like good Italian food!
