Social Profile:

Old School! This is not a restaurant for self-identifying foodies, cranky Yelpsters or cry babies. We never chase the latest food fad. The salad greens don’t come with an ancestry report. Pot au Feu’s menu is the classic food of France’s villages, farmhouses, Grandmothers’ tables and Sunday afternoon dinners with friends. We have a full bar, wonderful classic cocktails, French wines and spaces for private parties and special events. Our 1875 building with stone walls, brick floor and heavy wooden beams is the perfect setting for a truly classic Bistro which opened in 1972. A favorite of Julia Child. Bon Appétit!

Serving traditional French bistro favorites in a somewhat high-end setting since 1972.

My wife & I went for a date night without the kiddos.

Service was fantastic. Came in for our reservations, was greeted promptly & the host/bartender asked for a minute. They wanted to make sure we were comfortably seated because i was so tall & they separate the tables by partitions. I’ve never had that, & loved the attention to detail.

Server was great and welcoming.

Wife & I split escargot & the wild mushroom soup to start. I’d go back just for that. Escargot wasn’t drowning in butter and it was wonderfully cooked. Mushroom soup was the best I’ve had. Apparently the chef specializes in mushrooms.

We had the Cassoulet a la Maison & Boeuf a la Bourguignon. Both were prepared very well.

I by know means go out of my way for french food but that was a great experience. Also it was our preferred ambience (quiet, dim).

First time diners.

I can’t begin to give this review fair justice. It literally feels like you’ve been transported somewhere on the outskirts of Paris. You walked down the stairs and our greeted immediately by the restaurant owner Bob Burke. He’s very welcoming, it made me feel right at home, but it is authentic, He just understands people. We sat at a beautiful little table, we’re greeted by an amazing waitress, Hillary. Both Bob and Hillary explained the menu to us, which for first-timers in French cuisine was very helpful. I had the house, special beef, and my wife had the farmers chicken. Both meals were exceptional. We ended up staying in the restaurant for about a good hour afterwards in which we made new friends at the bar, and Bob showed us the entire restaurant from the upstairs dining room to the colonial Tavern. He built downstairs. I can’t say everybody will have the same experience at this restaurant, but I’d wager to bet that if you asked for a tour, you would get one no questions asked. If you’re looking for an amazing date night, I can’t think of a better restaurant in the entire state of Rhode Island. From start to finish it’s a 10 out of 10. Thank you to everybody for the great experience.

We went for a birthday dinner to Pot au Feu and the experience was very disappointing. We are not foodies. We simply appreciate good, freshly prepared food. This was not to be found at this restaurant.

We ordered the Escargots. We wondered where the garlic and butter was with this appetizer. This was the first disappointment on what was supposed to be a special evening.

My partner had the Fruits de Mer and she was disappointed by the quality of the sea food. The codfish was dry and overcooked, as well as the shrimp. The broth did not have much flavor. My partner is an accomplished cook, she was raised on the ocean and she knows her seafood.

I ordered the Pot au Feu. It came with a small amount of beef and chicken and entirely too much cabbage and potatoes. However, the large bowl of broth that came with it was flavorful. For the exorbitant prices charged at this establishment, we should have been able to count on a better experience.

The staff was very kind to us but it would not be inaccurate to call the atmosphere a bit outdated. The restaurant posts a warning on their website, which reads, “ Yelpsters, Self identifying foodies and crybabies, please, stay away.”

How insulting is this? All customers should be welcome. Excluding those who actually might know what good food is does not comprise a good business strategy. For a restaurant which is Road on a reputation for perhaps too long, we will not be returning. Our time in our dollars will be going elsewhere.

Felt like I was in the woody Allen movie Midnight in Paris and was transported to another time. Lovely – delicious, warm and charming. It’s not every day where you can eat authentic French cuisine lauded by Julia Child. The owner was welcoming and kind. Coming back. My new secret spot to impress. Now if I could only find a date to take here. 😉

Fantastique! We celebrated my birthday and had an exceptional experience. From the friendly and attentive staff to the delicious food and intimate ambiance. It was a great experience all around!

The Soupe a l’Oignon Gratinee was incredible and definitely one of the best we’ve ever had. For dinner, I had the Canard Roti et Confit Framboise and loved it, as well as a French martini and, of course, the creme brûlée.

My husband loved the Pot au Feu aux Fruits de Mer and claimed it was one of the best seafood dishes he’s ever ordered at a restaurant. My mom ordered the Boeuf a la Bourguignon and enjoyed her dish as well. All around we had a great experience with top notch service, and I even had my leftovers elegantly wrapped up in the shape of a tin foil duck, which I found to be a lovely touch. From start to finish, it was very evident that a lot of thought was put into every aspect of the dinner’s experience and it truly brought us back to our own dining experience in France years ago. We highly recommend!

The above stars have been well earned . The food and crafted cocktails are unsurpassed in Providence .Truly creative and exotic appetizers and entrees . Service is always impeccable and the owner , Bob Burke was born to be a restaunteer and host . He is a wealth of information on all things culinary and the history of the Providence restaurant scene . Not to mention his antidotes about his late friend Julia Childs .

His sharing of the same with his guests truly enhances the evening . In short we love everything about this gem of a restaurant .

Went to dinner Friday evening, it was incredible! Beautiful old world bistro, with a touch of class. Wait staff helpful, and a wonderful owner/gentleman. Of course my date was amazing to say the least.

The wonderful aroma as you descend the stairs to the restaurant let you know what kind of a meal this will be! You are welcomed and seated by the owner. Water and warm bread and butter soon appear. The menu is classic country French. The chef is marvelous every dish that we have tried is delicious. The onion soup and the mushroom soup are favorites. The chef specializes in mushrooms. Desserts are small, rich portions of French classics. Unfortunately the wine list has suffered due to U S government actions. Hopefully that will resolve soon and the restaurant can restock some of its lesser known, but delightful wines. Highly recommended.

Wonderful service, amazing atmosphere, beautiful crusty bread! I had the tournedos bordelaise, the texture of the beef was phenomenal! I also want to mention how friendly and charismatic the man who greets & seats you is – I wish I had caught his name, but I believe that’s actually him (a couple of years ago ) in the photo with Julia. A great encounter overall.
