Magpie Café & Coffeehouse has been a beloved gathering place in Decorah since 1996. What started as a small café on Winnebago Street has grown into a community staple on Water Street, serving scratch-made breakfast and lunch with locally sourced ingredients. Proudly brewing Colectivo Coffee, Magpie also offers specialty espresso drinks, teas, cocktails, ciders, beer, kombucha, and more. Through challenges like the pandemic and a fire, Magpie has remained resilient, giving back to the town it loves. Whether you’re a regular or visiting for the first time, you’re always welcome here. ❤️☕

Locally owned with tons of character, this spot in Decorah’s historic district serves excellent coffee and fresh, flavorful breakfasts. We came on a Sunday morning (thanks to Max & Sarah at Dixie’s Biergarten for the tip!) and loved the vibe — even if the entry area gets a little chaotic during peak times.
Ambiance:
Located in a beautiful, walkable area with parallel parking and local shops. Inside, it’s cozy but the foyer is tight, especially with window seating right where customers line up to order. Ordering at the counter and grabbing a menu from the far wall can be tricky when it’s crowded. Staff were friendly and upbeat, and we were given a buzzer for coffee pickup.
Food & Drinks:
• Coffees: Iced S’mores Cold Brew (Kim) and a White Zombie (me) — both excellent.
• Food: Biscuits & Gravy ($9) with a perfect over-easy egg ($2.40), plus an omelette ($13) with portabella (+$1.25), avocado (+$0.80), and sourdough toast. Fresh, flavorful, and satisfying.
We sat in the back seating area, grabbed water from the self-serve station, enjoyed our meal, then bussed our own table.
Bottom Line:
Bustling and friendly with great food and drinks — definitely worth a visit when in Decorah.
Note: You’ll be prompted for a tip when paying, before any food is served, in a counter-order/self-serve model. Not a deal-breaker, but worth knowing.
