Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Fish is wild, native or ethically-farmed and sustainably caught on day boats using specific and targeted method of fishing. Crab comes direct from the fishermen in Whitby, scallops are hand-dived and oysters come from Lindisfarne. Game comes from small local farms and estates which have less intense and smaller shoots to maintain the delicate balance in population control. Wild food is foraged from the local countryside by the chefs. Menus take inspiration from the sea, the forest and the Yorkshire countryside. Head Chef and owner, Stephen Andrews creates a small, regularly evolving a la carte menu of simple seasonal plates allow the ingredients to shine.
Cosy restaurant serving sustainable fish & game dishes amid laid-back surroundings.

Reviews
The presentation of dishes is beautiful. We visited for Valentines this year as the restaurant is perfect for a romantic date night. It isn’t the cheapest of restaurants but we didn’t wish to opt for a cheap restaurant as we wanted a beautiful meal with quality produce and that’s what we experienced. We chose an item from each section of the menu from snack to dessert and everything was nothing less than perfect. The negative reviews I have seen seem to be from those who aren’t familiar with fine dining type restaurants which does seem unfair to the business. A simple google search would have made it clear on the type of restaurant Fish and Forest is. This is an amazing restaurant and we will be returning on special occasions. Having visited on two very different occasions years apart yet witnessing the same consistency and quality means this business deserves nothing less than five stars. The staff are very attentive and knowledgeable on the menu. The seating is incredibly spacious which is a rarity nowadays as businesses tend to squish as many tables in the building as they can manage. The customer is truly at the centre of the business and the customer experience is very much considered. You are taken through the entire menu and in my opinion this is one the best restaurants that York has to offer.
We knew it was a limited menu but this means each dish needs to be on form.
Venison was the only meat available both as a starter and main. Not great so I chose it as a main. The meat was spongy. I’m not going to speculate why as it can be for a number of reasons. Edible but nothing I’d like to repeat.
The fish dishes were poor. Neither the fish nor seafood gave any indication that they’d recently seen the sea. The only bright spots were the puddings and the bread.
Wine list short but passable.
At over £100 a head we won’t be back.
The menu is quite small but varied. Stone bass and daal was eye opening. Venison with whisky sauce was delicious but the highlight was halibut with green peppercorn sauce. 10/10
I’d say, fish and forest definitely should be on “must visit” list if you ever visit York.
The team in the restaurant is super friendly and they kindly found seats for us despite not having booking reservation.
The staff were really friendly and welcoming and the food was top notch. Some really unusual dishes and stunning flavours/textures. Really interesting wine list too with some lovely natural wines.
Really busy buzzy atmosphere. Highly recommended.
For my second visit, the venison, sea bass, beetroot, crab tart, scallops and desserts were all fantastic. They also have a delicious white Rioja and a syrah which are well worth trigjg.
One downside is that I strongly recommend that they install some sound proofing, as a loud group near us reverberated throughout.
Finally, the cocktails (Peru to Japan and Chocolate Old Fashioned) were brilliant, and very inventive.
