This place is as authentic as it gets. House made tortillas slow braised meats and great beverages. Staff was super friendly and welcoming. Chef Christina Martinez has an amazing story as well.

We had a very good lunch at Casa Mexico. We tried the chicken and barbacoa tacos, along with the rice and beans—all of which were flavorful and authentically prepared. The atmosphere is casual: you order at the counter, find a seat, and they call your name when the food is ready. It was busy during Saturday lunch, but the wait wasn’t too long.

Driest birria taco I have ever had in my life. I do not recommend the food here even to my worst enemy. Stay away and don’t waste your money.

We recently checked out Casa Mexico while we were in Philly, and we must say that we felt like family and at home! The service, music, food, and ambiance were all outstanding. I loved the mole and could taste the care that went into making the dish. The pozole was also delicious. Now we understand why the chef is a James Beard Award recipient!

If I told you I’d been waiting for a long time for this day to come, I wouldn’t be lying, and I’m not talking about my birthday. It was about visiting this place, this slice of heaven, Casa Mexico aka South Philly Barbarcoa. Initially, before the restaurant, SP Barbarcoa had limited hours to sample their wares, but no more, Casa Mexico steps in to offer this goodness everyday but Sunday. Consider yourself blessed. Long has been the lore of chef Cristina Martinez, and South Philly Barbarcoa, “google” her you’ll see. Sitting down to partake in this goodness is a special treat. True to fame, the meats are gloriously slow cooked, so much so, each bite is juicy, succulent and tender. Should you come, like me, particularly for the barbarcoa, you will not be disappointed. As a huge fan of Mexican cuisine, this is as authentic as it gets. Although I’m not privy to the witchcraft to make the barbarcoa come to life, it is special indeed sorcery. Sauce liberally if you choose, but the purety of the barbarcoa is something to behold on your tastebuds, it hits the soul. The atmosphere reminds you of Mexico, austere, bare bones, but full of life, color and flavor. There is indoor and outdoor seating, it is both comfortable and homie. The staff is friendly and informative. Whether your looking for catering services, or a quick bite via their tacos, you will not be disappointed. Your only disappointment is that you didn’t visit earlier, or more often. Yes, it’s that good. A gem in the city.

My friends and I made a reservation for their Mexican Chrismas Dinner and it was phenomenal! We were served a multi-course meal so varied, everyone had a different favorite dish. Staff was welcoming and charming, and we got a visit from Chef Cristina herself! Highly recommend Casa Mexico for parties or a casual meal.

This place is a vibe! We drive 45 minutes for delicious breakfast el gratin sarten and for lunch the taco salads and pitchers of margaritas. The service is always top notch and the food is so good. During the summer you can sit out on the boardwalk to people watch.

Wow just wow. Authentic good eat. Made a perfect brunch and the service was great. The meat was tender and juicy and the sauces provided were great. Try their spiced coffee, it really warmed the soul. UPDATE: Finally got there tacos and woooooooow. The carnitas is so juicy and tasty. Major points for getting 4 tacos instead of 3 like most places AND get being able to switch them up. 2nd UPDATE: Man I can not stop writing about this place. Got soup this time and the ceviche. Both excellent dishes. Nothing on this menu has disappointed me and the service is amazing.

Great tacos!
I tried the Barbacoa when they were located at their old location, amazing. The owner of South Philly Barbacoa relocated to her new location inside Casa Mexico. The new space is three doors down on 9th towards Washington Ave.
Pictured here is the Chorizo. Nice flavor and had a little spice kick but not overpowering. Will order again.
I only wish you were able to mix and match the tacos – to be able to explore the menu within the same visit. Considering the tacos are priced the same. I don’t see why you can’t mix the choice of meat for three tacos. Overall, still a great experience.
If you are concerned about not speaking Spanish. It’s okay. Spanish and English are spoken and understood when you place your order.
Things to note:
If you order from the South Philly Barbacoa menu CASH ONLY.
The Casa Mexico menu takes all payments: Cash & Card.
You order first then you can seat yourself.
It gets crowded depending on the time of day & day of the week. I went on a Sunday. Wasn’t crowded when arrived but as my food showed up and I was leaving. It was a nice amount of people waiting to order.
There is limited outdoor seating and you can sit inside Casa Mexico, as well.
I recommend trying Casa Mexico if you enjoy authentic Mexican food. Freshly made tortillas!

Is the masa fresh? Considering that they grind the soaked corn by hand right in front of you… yes it IS! it results in the most unique tortillas I’ve ever tasted! This place is a treasure. Everything is spiced perfectly… heat but no burn! Guac, esquites, ceviche, tostados… all too die for! Add great, friendly service… this is an amazing find!
