Their seasonal options are always a good choice
On my recent visit, I ordered the Elvis Pretzley—a thoughtfully crafted sundae with pretzels, chocolate sauce, and caramel. It was rich without being excessive, and the contrast between the salty crunch of the pretzels and the smooth custard brought a quiet satisfaction. It was indulgent in the best sense, and a fitting nod to the man whose music provided the soundtrack to much of my youth. I sat for a while after finishing it, recalling long evenings and simpler pleasures.
I also took note that only small, single-serve water cups were available—no large water offered. In a world of excess, I rather appreciated that choice. It kept things modest and reminded me of the days when you took what you needed and no more.
The young people working were respectful and efficient. They did not rush or chatter unnecessarily, and that too was appreciated. I felt, during those few moments at Lix, that I was in a place where time had slowed, and that is a rare and valuable thing.
Lix is more than a custard stand. It is a place where small details are done right, and where memory and taste meet quietly, with grace.
Andy’s has always been what I’ve considered the best. We went to Andy’s in St Louis yesterday and the product seems to have less cream and egg than in the past. Lix has always been how frozen custard should be (creamy and rich). I haven’t been to Lix in a while but I’d assume it’ the same as always. Lix was equivalent to Andy’s but I still gave Andy’s the top spot since I knew of Andy’s first (huge in Springfield). Now Lix is the quality frozen custard champ in my book. Better than Ted Drews. Better than Andy’s. Just a great product!
