The prime ribeye, cooked medium rare, was perfectly executed and easily one of the highlights of the night. It was tender, deeply flavorful, and confidently prepared. The mashed potatoes were rich and balanced, pairing beautifully with the steak.
And then there were the brussels sprouts. I have never tasted brussels sprouts that delicious. They pulled the entire meal together and, alongside the mashed potatoes, sealed the experience as something truly memorable.
To complement the meal, the 2019 Miner Family Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon brought depth and polish to the table. On the palate it is full bodied yet composed, offering generous black fruit flavors balanced by savory nuances of mocha, dried herbs and cedar. The tannins are firm and structured but refined, carrying bright fruit into a finish that is lively and persistent with a touch of spice. It was a seamless pairing with the ribeye and added another layer of sophistication to an already outstanding evening.
From the hospitality to the execution on the plate, Mustard Seed in Davis delivers an experience that feels both elevated and welcoming. Five stars without hesitation.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the owners and they had arranged 2 tables in a private area for our group. Name cards were done showing the meal selection that was made the days prior. Everything was done correctly.
There was an amazing wine selection and with a party of 17, the owners surely knew how to recommend the choice of wine that goes well with our meals.
Food was excellent. The majority of the group had the rib eye which everyone said was done to perfection. A few had the cauliflower steak as well as the duck which I heard they also said was tasty. I personally went for the lamb which was delicious and well prepared. I really liked the watermelon & feta salad which was refreshing.
If you’re looking for a place to host a few people or even a small group such as what we did, I highly recommend this place. I knew everyone from my group had a lovely time here and everyone appreciated the service and hospitality.
The steak was very good, and the tomato bisque with puff pastry was excellent — rich, flavorful, and perfectly comforting.
Unfortunately, the Parmesan crisp on the Caesar salad was a disappointment. It wasn’t crisp at all — it smelled and tasted stale, as if it had been stored overnight near onions and garlic. It completely lost that lovely, nutty Parmesan flavor that makes it special.
The tables are uncomfortably small, forcing diners far too close together. We found ourselves practically breathing, chewing, and swallowing in each other’s faces — not healthy, not pleasant, and certainly not relaxing.
The bathroom is also poorly placed — small, directly next to the entrance. You can’t open the door without bumping into someone waiting to be seated. It felt stuffy and smelly, and it does not feel clean to wash your hands before the meal.
On the positive side, the wait staff were excellent — friendly, quick, professional, and thoughtful. They were clearly aware that many guests, like us, were attending the Itzhak Perlman concert and made sure service was smooth and timely.
There’s real potential here with the food, and we will gladly come back once you let us know these issues have been improved.
The combination of exceptional food and heartfelt service makes The Mustard Seed a truly special place to dine. Super grateful will definitely come back.
