Quick home cooking.

I love soul food, but it’s not my favorite cuisine. However, I really enjoyed this place with my family. We met up in the middle of the state. Some people drove up to an hour and a half to have dinner together. This is a great meeting spot for those who live in West Florida and for those who live in East Florida. In addition to my meal, I ordered food to take home. A bonus: staff was helpful.

During my recent spring baseball trip to Florida, I made it a point to stop by Mama’s Soul Food in Lakeland, and I’m so glad I did. As someone who always strives to support local Black-owned businesses when I travel for both business and personal reasons, I had high expectations—and Mama’s Soul Food did not disappoint.

I ordered the beef tips with rice and gravy, complemented by a side of yams and a slice of sweet potato pie. Let me tell you, the flavors were outstanding. The beef tips were tender and plentiful with the gravy adding a depth of flavor that paired perfectly with the rice. The yams were sweet and perfectly cooked, offering that perfect balance of warmth and sweetness that only the best soul food can achieve. And the sweet potato pie? I’m very picky when it comes to this dessert item and partial to my own Mom’s pie but this version was right up there. The crust was flaky, and the filling was smooth and not overpowered with spices that I have experienced at other establishments.

From the moment I stepped inside, I was welcomed with a warm greeting from the staff. The entire process from ordering to receiving my food was quick and efficient, which was much appreciated after a long day of travel. The atmosphere at Mama’s Soul Food was comfortable and inviting, with a clean environment that made it easy to see why people regularly stop in. The staff were professional, making the experience all the more pleasant.

If you’re ever in Lakeland and in the mood for some home-style cooking with a lot of heart, Mama’s Soul Food is definitely worth a visit. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this spot serves up delicious, soul-satisfying dishes that will leave you coming back for more!

My meal consists of quarter breast wing, collard greens, potato salad, dirty rice, cornbread, and peach cobbler for dessert.

I really wanted to love this place. I spent close to $80 for two oxtail and rice plates and one drink, and for that price I was expecting a lot more flavor, she did come over and see how we were doing, which I appreciated.
The oxtails were okay, but they didn’t taste like a $40 plate. I didn’t notice bay leaves or that deep, slow-cooked seasoning you usually expect with oxtails.
I was also disappointed that the cornbread and butter were both cold. It wasn’t bad food by any means, but it didn’t match the price point.
I’m hoping this was just an off day, because the food has potential — it just needs to line up better with the cost.

I contemplated my review as four star until I got home and realized that my to go container had a hole on The bottom of the container and it leaked all over my front seat because the cashier couldn’t even give me a bag to put it in. I had to go up to the cashier to get an I had to go up to the cashier to get a refill on my drink But I dined in? And I’m not sure if it was an TV or the radio was blasted. I was the only diner and the cashier was right behind me, making all types of noise with the silverware. Overall, my food was delicious taste wise however, when I bit into my pig feet, it was cold on the inside. The Black Eyed Peas had zero seasoning like they just came out of the can, The cabbage was also a little cold. Pix inserted

We called our Order in. It was our first time there and we were very excited. The atmosphere was very nice and the service was good. The food was very disappointing. Our Fried pork chops were so dry. The meatloaf and the smothered pork chops were very salty. The Black Eyed Peas were sour like they were spoiled. I can’t really say anything about the collard greens, I make my own and I think everybody is used to the way their grandma used to make collard greens so they weren’t like mine, but they weren’t terrible. The cabbage and the yams were delicious. The cornbread was delicious. It was hard to decipher with the mashed potatoes because the meat and gravy was just too salty to eat.

First off, the yams are bussin!! Baked macaroni n cheese us decent, only slightly mushy. The cornbread was cold, didnt melt my butter. The green beans were good, the ox tail was disappointing. If ypu could add some garlic powder to your food, it would make a huge difference in the flavor. Just my 2 cents worth. But overall OK, service was Great.
