While travelling to Detroit recently, I finally had the excuse to stop in Cleveland for supper. Naturally I had to stop by Mendel’s Kansas City BBQ. Mendel is known for his amazingly delicious BBQ and smoker. The place definitely had a vibe, and I was digging it. Very rustic, lots of art on the wall etc. After speaking to the manager, we finally settled on what to order. I went with the Brisket Truffle Poutine, the Smoked Fried Wings, Loaded Knish, World Famous Burnt Ends and the Smoked Lamb Riblets. Now being from Montreal, I have grown up with milchig Poutine, which consists of French fries, parve gravy and cheese. However, I have never had a fleishig Poutine. It was really good. There was a nice amount of mushroom truffle gravy sauce, the fries were nice and crispy, and it paired well with amazingly delicious pulled smoked brisket. When you go, you NEED to try this dish. Moving on to the wings, I didn’t expect them to be smoked, but they actually were. We took the buffalo sauce and the wings had a nice fry on them. We were curious about the Loaded Knish, so naturally we had to try it. The dish consisted of a jumbo potato knish topped with their famous mushroom truffle gravy. If that wasn’t enough, they even added some pastrami. It was a mouthful, but a delicious mouthful, very unique and different. Everyone who knows me said if you ever go to Mendel’s you NEED to try both the Smoked Lamb Riblets and the World Famous Burnt Ends. We started with the burnt ends. They were packed with flavor, smokey, bbq, fall apart yummy goodness. There is a reason that they are world famous. Finally it was time for the Smoke Lamb Riblets. When they were brought to our table I was immediately overcome with the smell of smokey goodness. It looked amazing. The riblets had a dry rub on them and I am a big fan. Each bite was better than the last and I was sold. In closing, Cleveland isn’t that far away and its definitely worth the drive for some amazing smoked BBQ.

Food was pretty good in taste but sauce could have been included. See photo for all that was included in the $100 combo platter. Very very small portions. We only got 2 ribs for a supposed rack of back ribs, 2 pieces of brisket, and about 5-6 burnt ends along with a small cup of beans and togo box of fries. I don’t think I would revisit because I feel shorted.

Mendel’s KC BBQ may be nicely designed, and the staff pleasant, but that’s where the positives end. This was, without a doubt, one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had.
We ordered four dishes, each more disappointing than the last:
Salmon Bites – These arrived cold, dry, and completely tasteless. We couldn’t get past the first bite.
Brisket Egg Rolls – Burnt beyond recognition. They were blackened like they came out of a bonfire. If the brisket wasn’t dead before, it definitely was after this.
Grilled Chicken Breast with Mashed Potatoes – The chicken was dry, but in a desperate attempt to eat something, it was the only dish I managed to consume. The mashed potatoes, however, were cold and gray. I didn’t even try them.
Burnt Ends – Supposedly the restaurant’s signature dish. It was tiny and barely edible. Sadly, that counts as a win compared to everything else.
Fries – The only thing that saved us from going completely hungry.
To top it all off, the manager didn’t offer any substitutions, replacements, or even an apology. We were charged the full $150 (!!) for what was essentially an inedible meal.
Kosher restaurants sometimes have a reputation for subpar service, but Mendel’s BBQ takes that to a whole new level. This was by far the worst kosher restaurant experience we’ve ever had.
Next time you read glowing reviews, consider this one too.

The food was okay. With the name being KC BBQ, I thought the food would be great. However, the burnt ends were just okay, mediocre at best. The meat was definitely tender, but it had only barbecue sauce added to it and no other flavors. The poutine was decent, and I think that was the only saving grace we had. The drinks—the strawberry lemonade was good, the Moscow Mule was okay. The service was not too bad. We were the only patrons in the restaurant, and the service was just okay. I would definitely not get the brisket again.

Highly recommend! Great food and impressively quick service. Pulled brisket sandwich was delicious and had a good texture. Fries are good but nothing insane, probably depends on your preference. The iron skillet blondie was amazing and next time I will be getting the ice cream add on. Two gender neutral bathrooms are available.

This is our fourth time purchasing our dinner here, and honestly it will be the last.
The first time we dined in, and although it was busy, it was a really nice experience.
The next two times we got our food to go. It was delicious and well-prepared.
This time, I don’t know what happened but our meal came to $91 and we got soup, salad, sweet potato fries, Miami fries and a side of burnt ends. The burnt ends were extremely dry and saturated in sauce. My Miami fries were missing the garlic aoli sauce and the powdered sugar, and the burnt ends were also dry. When we called the restaurant the young lady on the phone laughed (nervous laughter?) and put my partner on hold. When she returned, she said the chef said that she “knows for a fact that she put it on there.” (As you can see in both pictures, clearly there is nothing on them.) She asked if we could come back and he told her that we couldn’t, we don’t live in the area. He also asked if he could send the pics as proof and she said no. She said the owner was out of town and would call the next day to offer a refund on the fries. Still waiting…
I couldn’t care less about the refund. I don’t like the chef’s callous response, being laughed at by the hostess and the lack of care in preparing our food.
Nice place for someone else and its intended demographic, but we will not be returning.

Could not have asked for better food or experience. I had to go back & forth between dishes because they were THAT good.
I frequently travel to the Carolinas & I will put this up there with the best of them. Everything was stellar & it was a first time experience that I’ll never forget.
It seems there are some early reviewers that have been too quick to attack the pricing of the food without realizing it is a kosher restaurant. Perhaps in time this will become more understood.
All in all, 10/10 & I’ll be recommending it to all of my clients. Can’t wait to go back!

Dino rib was bland and fatty. Burnt ends were ok. Fries were good but served with no ketchup. Green beans were so salty I couldn’t eat them. I expected better. There’s a big menu and I haven’t tried the pulled brisket so I might give them another try. Beer nextdoor was good.

Kosher BBQ restaurant with a wide variety of offerings for meat eaters, yet there are a few choices for vegetarian too.
Make sure you call ahead for reservations. The restaurant fills quickly. We had no reservations, but there is a small counter area where we were able to sit. The food and service is excellent!!
For vegans. I strongly recommend the Portobello Mushroom Sandwich with Fries…this literally melted in my mouth, and was served with fries. The coleslaw was freshly made, absolutely delicious.
We definitely are returning, can’t wait to have the chocolate lava cake for dessert again!

So the food was ok but do not expect customer service. They have a specific audience they want and they make sure to make you feel uncomfortable if you aren’t apart of that. When we called to confirm our 9pm reservation, they rushed us in and told us to make sure we knew what we wanted I guess because they closed at 10pm. They forgot the ribs as part of my platter which I didn’t notice until the next day when I reread the menu and realized they came with the platter and when I called I was told the owner was busy and the person who answered the phone laughed at me and told me to call back in 30. No apology and didn’t even take my number so that the owner could call me back. Our food was $200. Never again!!! Save your money and go elsewhere! They don’t appreciate your money here! I’ve included pics of the platter which I upgraded to a Dino platter. No ribs in sight. Wings were a bunch of different sizes and burnt but covered in sauce so you couldn’t tell. BBQ seemed old. Waste of money. Also our server was on her second day who knows maybe that’s why the service sucked. We paid for Hyde park and got City Bbq. I try not to leave negative reviews because I hate to see people lose a business but these guys don’t deserve our patronage. I wouldn’t go back for free.
