Omakase dinner was very nice, appetizers especially so. Premium pricing but you get what you pay for. Service could have been a bit more attentive

Came here on a whim when another restaurant nearby was at capacity, and it ended up being a solid find. From the start, the service was really friendly and welcoming. We sat outside with heaters, and it was surprisingly comfortable even on a chilly December night.

We ordered:
• Soft shell crab roll
• Blue crab California roll
• Yellowtail avocado
• Jumbo shrimp & vegetable tempura
• Salmon skin salad

Standouts for me were the yellowtail avocado roll — simple, fresh, and also one of the lower-priced rolls on the menu — and the salmon skin salad, which came in generous portions and was very shareable. The tempura was light and crispy; I’d recommend ordering two portions if you want something more filling.

Overall, the food was solid across the board. Pricing skews slightly higher, likely due to the location, but portions were fair. We spent about $38 per person and left comfortably full.

A great backup plan that didn’t disappoint — I’d definitely return when in the area.

A great omakase experience. Chefs here tend to do more appetizer dishes before they start serving sushi, and to me, that is what makes this place different from Ohshima. Attentive service. They are willing to work with you on splitting up sake into multiple portions. Omakase is on the pricier side but worth the experience

One of the most reasonably priced omakase options around town, although the price has increased since my first visit. Despite the change, considering the quality and variety of the food, it remains one of my top recommendations for omakase. There are two options available, and it’s advisable to make a reservation, ensuring you’re aware of your booking time as changes may not be possible afterward.

The sashimi quality is excellent, but what stands out the most are the surprisingly good appetizers—each uniquely customized. I appreciate their balanced and diverse flavors; it’s a delightful experience.

One of the best Japanese Omakase in the area. Every dish is beautiful presented and tasted so well. I recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a unique dinning experience and great food.

Walked in here after getting off the Catalina Flyer and we loved it. Our favorites were the spicy tuna crispy appetizer and the avocado eel roll. The service was really really good…exceptional. Constantly cleaning our table. Very polite. I would recommend and gladly come again.

A quaint sushi “bar” in Newport. They are very welcoming as all the staff greet you as you walk in. The short time I was sitting at the sushi bar…It was very apparent that this was a neighborhood restaurant that the locals love and frequent often.
I’ve been a few sushi restaurants in my time and yes the Omakase is the way to go. For those of you who have a love of sushi and adventure, this is a chef’s choice menu.
For me this experience like NO other sushi experience ever. Yes, the fish selection was excellent, the service was optimal and on point. But what makes me say that this was exceptional experience is that as soon as the sushi chef realized I was left-handed…he switched the sushi around so I was able to pick up the sushi with my chopsticks ease. Well only if you’re left handed would you appreciate this. And this is why I think this was THE best hands down. Don’t get me wrong the fish selection and all the extras were amazingly delicious. I’ll definitely be back when ever I visit.

My favorite place for omakase in OC! It is a hidden gem with GREAT quality food. Chef Yoshi is very creative and talented. He uses fresh seasonal ingredients to change up the course so there is always new surprise. It is well worth it!

I came to Shan Shi Go with one of my sushi enthusiast friends. We decided to sit at the sushi bar rather than sit down as if you do so you can do omakase rather than the set menu. I don’t think it’s officially listed on their printed menus with a price but it is really good. The sushi chefs know their stuff and come up with amazing combos. The service is really fast and the whole place is super clean. I would definitely recommend coming by if you want to do omakase in Newport or if you just like sushi.
