This was our first time there. It was suggested by everybody that works next door at Publics. I’m glad we took the recommendation. The food was incredible. The service was on point and the drinks spot on. my wife had a blue margarita and I had a Long Island.. our waiter, Daniel could not have been any better. He made great recommendations and suggestions. The prices are very reasonable and the portions sizes were generous..

My wife got her usual lunch tamales (handmade every day in the restaurant). She loves them. I branched out from my normal lunch lunch fajitas to the fajita burrito. As you can see from the photos, a very generous portion is served. I’ve eaten fajitas all across the southwest U.S. but have found none to be better than these. They were so good my wife made me slow down and enjoy the meal. The service is not only good, it is great, very attentive. I had a choice of getting to a doctor appointment on time or slowing down and enjoying the food. The result was, “sorry I am late, doc!” Bottom line, the food and service are 5 stars!!!

5/22/25 another great lunch and outstanding service from Daniel 11/5/24 another great lunch. 3/21/24 back for second visit and everything was as good as the first. First time here today, and was very impressed with the cleanliness of the restaurant. Service from Daniel was exceptional and I’ll put the food up against any Mexican restaurant in the area.

La Altena is the hidden jewel of East Brainerd. I’ve lived in the area for well over 20 years and this is my favorite restaurant. The staff takes care of you, the food is amazing, and it’s close to home. I’d encourage anyone to come up with a better Mexican restaurant (hint: you can’t).

Met our Son and DIL here for dinner on the way up for a visit .. restaurant is tucked away next to a Publix in East Brainerd .. our server (tall and slim with a “Maria” tattoo, my Son said his name may have been Miguel) was very friendly, funny, and helpful making the dining experience very positive .. the food (Chimichanga w/Steak and Veggies Fajita) was also tasty and portions are large enough for a leftover meal which is a plus .. we will be back again in the future

How this place has anything more than 2 stars is beyond me. This place is nasty. Like the sticky greasy floors, smells off type of nasty restaurant. Serve stale chips, use rancid old oil, serve day old dry refried beans type of nasty. All these people giving five stars seriously need to get their taste buds checked out.

They use OLD RANCID OIL! Horrible food! I brought it up to who seemed to be the owner and showed him all the greasy oily chips that came out in the basket and told him they all tasted and smelled rancid. He proceeded to tell me that that’s how the chips are supposed to be and brought out another basket of chips which were the exact same. Of course I didn’t eat them. Saved my family and I a huge stomach ache. Then a few minutes later the senior comes back and asks us if we’re going to eat the 2 rancid baskets of chips or not. We told him no and he proceeds to take the baskets and empties them back into the big pile of chips in the chip frying machine to reuse it!!! (the machine is viewable from the front of the house)THEY RESUSE UNEATEN BASKETS OF CHIPS!!! NASTY!! Anyways we ordered our food. Came out cold luke warm at best. Rice was way too salty. They use actual mozzarella cheese instead of the queso fresco/oaxaca cheese traditionally used. We paid and got out quick. Luckily Publix was still open and ended up just getting a sandwich from the deli.

7/2/23 dined in after church on Sunday. Plenty of parking- located in a grocery store strip mall in a pretty suburban area. We were immediately seated- there were a good number of tables for large groups. Restaurant and bathrooms were very clean. Staff was friendly and our waitress had our drinks or within 3 minutes. Orders were taken correctly and delivered to the table in under 15 minutes. The food was hearty and delicious! Family friendly atmosphere. Reasonable prices. Would definitely eat here again!

Daniel is the best, Jackie is a close second. I live close by and bring guest often and they always provide a great experience. Manuel and Jasmine always say hey and make sure everything is going great with our experience.
