So here it’s been a while since they have been open.
The salad bar is not worth charging for with wilted lettuce, the tomatoes I’m pretty sure we’re a few days old as well as other toppings.
Dinners entrees were good, portion sizes and presentation need some help.
This place has the potential to be a hidden gold mine in Elizabeth.

We decided to try Bernie’s again it’s been a long while sense the last time. I always see posts on Facebook of their food.
The special for the night was the fish and chips. Figured ok I will give it a try.
NOT GOOD!!!!!!!
1st things it’s all you can eat. The 1st plate you get should have 2-3 pieces of fish. They bring you 1. Super greasy, and fish was purchased at the frozen food department.
After this experience, my 1 star review still stands. I feel like other menu items might be better, but that’s beside the point. If you’re going to have a weekly or nightly special it should be as good if not better that your regular menu items
I walked in at what can only be described as “post-lunch” and the place had a few patrons, but wasn’t packed. The woman who sat me was very welcoming in that down-home small town kind of way and I was seated at my choice of seats. Instead of taking up the large booth to myself, I decided on a smaller table near a window. Sadly, none of the windows had good views, so I sat where I could see my vehicle.
The hostess turned out to be the owner’s mother and she gave me the rundown on Bernie’s Restaurant. Bernie, it appears, was the beloved grandmother of the owner.
All the food, according to the hostess, was made right there in the kitchen. The meats and vegetables were locally sourced and hand-cooked; the fries were cut and cooked to order and the sweet-tea was just sweet enough.
I ordered the avocado burger, medium well, which came with the traditional fixings of lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles on the side and my choice of cheese (pepperjack, if you must know). Everything was good but I think the bread of the bun overwhelmed the taste of the burger itself. In that, I can’t remember what the burger tasted like. I can recall the textures and flavors of all the fixins’ but not the meat. Weird. Maybe I’m just used to the grease-burgers of 5 Guys.
But, everyone there was extremely friendly. The cook, and husband of the owner, came out and we talked tattoos for a few minutes and I was given the low-down on the plethora of moo-cows decorating the place. Grandma Bernie apparently had a penchant for collecting cows and, I’m told, there are many more where those came from.
Would I recommend Bernie’s? Absolutely. Will I be back? Without a doubt.
Bacon and eggs weren’t bad though.
