I honestly wasn’t expecting great food at a place where the main attraction is clearly Mt. Hood—yet the Cascade Dining Room completely blew me away. The salad was unbelievably fresh, the cheese plate had an impressive variety of snacks, the risotto was excellent, and the chicken… wow. Easily one of the top three chickens I’ve had in my life (and I’ve tried many!). Truly a hidden gem at Timberline.
Our friendly waiter seated us and suggested their top dishes, including the Grilled Northwest Beef, Braised Lamb Shank, and a Crab Cake appetizer. Everything was spot on! The portions were generous – we could have easily shared a single entrée. The beef was perfectly cooked, tender, and bursting with flavor, while the lamb shank was deliciously rich and fall-off-the-bone tender. These comforting dishes warmed us right up.
To end the night, we shared a skillet cookie with ice cream, the perfect sweet finish. The view from our table was magical, with snowflakes sparkling in the light just outside the window. Cascade Dining Room made for a perfect evening – great food, warm ambiance, and unforgettable views. Highly recommended!
We ordered grilled shrimp, porcini bisque, Cesar, ribs and steak. And we had two deserts. The soup and ribs were fine. The other items were not good. The shrimp were overcooked and flavorless. The Cesar was Ok but made with butter lettuce as a twist against the classic Romaine – why? (The dressing smothered and collapsed the butter lettuce.) The steak (which I ordered as a safe bet) was overcooked (ordered med-rare but presented med-well), tough and lacking in flavor. It was also presented as two, thin steaks stacked on each other – odd. The sauce over the steak was potentially innovative but could not, and should not need to, make up for the basic steak quality and cooking execution mistakes. That steak price was $63, btw – would not have minded IF the quality had been in accordance. Both deserts (cranberry/apple cobbler and chocolate lava cake) both had odd flavors – those should be easy, classic wins.
The ambiance was lacking: What has happened to the table linens? Why no green plants? Why no fire in the hearth? Flowers missing on our table. Music maybe?
The staff were friendly and helpful.
We visit Timberline Lodge frequently. I learned to ski there 50 years ago. We have had special wedding anniversaries at Cascade in years past. At present the Cascade Dinning room fails to honor the unique and special history of Timberline Lodge and, very unfortunately, I will not return to dine before significant changes are made.
