Kent is a county with two names. The Garden of England is the one it earnt hundreds of years ago, which we celebrate at Pearly Cow Margate. It was down to its rolling hills, fertile pastures, teeming waters, wild-flowering woods, chalk grasslands, and ancient orchards. And the prolific growing culture it is known for is still carried in the skills of today’s organic producers, higher-welfare farmers and specialist cultivators. This abundance of bright British flavours is celebrated at Pearly Cow, Margate, to the views of the North Sea stretching out to the horizon. The open kitchen’s grill caramelises cuts and catches of the day, and the ice counter promises the richness of rawness. Vibrancy and freshness are everything here.

Pearly Cow was high up on my list to visit. We were greeted by friendly attentive staff, who took our coats and showed us to a beautiful table. Staff were great throughout.
Our drinks order was taken (1 gin & lemonade and 1 bottled Bavarian lager) and then came the padron peppers. Absolutely delicious and perfectly salty – this dish was served to share. Then we were asked how we would like out flat iron steak cooked.
This came shortly after, cooked to perfection, with fries, salad and a choice of sauce. This was a hearty portion but I could have had it 10x over – absolutely delicious.
Then for dessert we had some caramel / chocolate truffles to finish.
All in all I would love to go again to this classy and atmospheric resturant in the heart of Margate.
The welcome was friendly, and I really enjoyed the oysters and the smoked salmon, which was excellent. However, the dessert was disappointing, a “revisited” chocolate mousse that didn’t resemble a mousse at all in taste or texture.
What let the experience down was the lack of attentiveness from the staff. My table wasn’t cleared before dessert, and I had to wait far too long to get the bill. A shame, because it could have been a truly great evening.
Also, since the kitchen is open to the dining area, I believe everything needs to be flawless and unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. I saw some of the kitchen staff spending a lot of time on their phones, which didn’t leave the best impression. In such a visible space, professionalism should be a priority.
The staff was extremely attentive and relocated us to a much closer table to the balcony seating area when it became available.
We had oysters to start with and Sunday lunch with a selection of delicious vegetables available from side dishes section and asked if we can also order an extra portion of roasted vegetables.
We can not recommend the Pearly Cow enough for the quality and service and will be definitely returning very soon. We loved the atmosphere and the beautiful outlook onto the bay with stunning sunset and a lovely array of cocktails to choose from.
We went for the Sunday lunch deal. The calamari to start was delicious, crispy batter and really tasty. One portion was big enough to share.
We both had the beef for our main and that was pink and succulent. The accompanying crispy potatoes and veg were lovely. The only downside was too little gravy to accompany the enormous Yorkshire pudding!
For dessert one had the panda cotta and the other the Kent cheese and crackers. Again both were really tasty and despite thinking we wouldn’t finish them, we did.
The staff were attentive without being over bearing and it was a really pleasant meal in lovely surroundings.
The food and drink is good, but at the price could be better; for example of freshly mixed drinks instead of bottled. And a really good chef would help although the food is pretty good for Margate. I would definitely return and bring friends and family and would love to stay in the hotel
Fabulous views and decor, however the service is poor. Waitresses aren’t rude, they are just clueless about customer service. No smiles, no greeting, no asking about the food/experience, bill arrived way too late. With service charged at 12.5%, I’d expect a service worth 12.5% not (-5%).
Unlikely to come back, wouldn’t recommend
