This is a spot not to miss! Make sure to make reservations as they are quite popular.
We started with wine and the hatch chilli artichoke dip for an appetizer. The dip was small and dry. Certainly not the creamy dip I was expecting.
After we finished our appetizer the waitress informed us that they had forgotten to give our entree order to the kitchen so we were left waiting another twenty minutes for our mains. They did not provide another appetizer, drink, dessert, discount, etc. as compensation for the error.
For entrees, we had the beef chimichurri and rosemary cranberry chicken. The beef was fine, but the mashed potato’s tasted like that had been seasoned with powdered seasoning and were too salty for me to eat. The rosemary cranberry chicken was served in a bowl with a spoon? The chicken had no color and could very well have been boiled.
If I was starving and this was the only restaurant open I would return, but overall Sweet Red Bistro was disappointing and not worth the price point.
We were blown away by the firecracker shrimp, and thankfully, we split both that appetizer and the tomato bisque because the steak, mashed potatoes, and brussels sprouts were so good we ate every bite, barely leaving room for creme brulee and coffee, but we got it done.
Truly the very best in Oregon!
On our second trip on New Year’s Eve, we headed to the older location on first street, where they were serving drinks and a champagne toast to kick off the new year.
From their special NYE cocktail menu, I tried the Salsa while my partner tried the Midnight Manhattan. The Salsa was spicy (as advertised), and had a nice savory flavor with the jalapeño tequila, serrano rum, ancho Reyes chili liqueur and Calabrian chilis coming together to provide a balanced kick in the face.
The Midnight Manhattan had an initial kick of rye whiskey, which softened into cinnamon and clove notes, before finishing with a chocolatey smoothness.
After toasting to the New Year with Cindy and the rest of the patrons, we enjoyed a second round where I got the Sidecar while my partner got the Paper Aeroplane.
The Sidecar was beautifully balanced with cognac, lemon, simple and orange liqueur. It contrasted nicely with my first cocktail (the Salsa), which was tasty but savory and spicy, so the sweet smoothness provided a nice finish to the night.
The Paper Aeroplane was the only slight miss of the night for us. The bourbon, Aperol, amaro and lemon provided an interesting combination of flavors, although we felt the flavors didn’t go together as well as in the other drinks.
Overall, it was a charming and cozy way to ring in the new year and we are very thankful that Sweet Red Bistro is a part of downtown Albany, as the service and drinks (haven’t tried the food yet) are top notch. This is a must try spot in Albany!
