Pionono Bakery in Manteo is not just good.
It’s “why did nobody tell me about this sooner?” good.
This place is fasaantastic.
Yes, that’s a word now.
You walk in thinking you’re grabbing a pastry.
You walk out considering booking a flight to Peru.
Everything tastes like it was made by someone who actually loves what they’re doing. Not rushed. Not basic. Not cookie-cutter.
The flavors? Different.
The texture? Elite.
The vibe? Warm, welcoming, and low-key dangerous for your self-control.
I tried to behave.
I failed.
If you live anywhere near Manteo and haven’t been here yet, that’s on you.
OBX has some gems… and this is absolutely one of them.
10/10. Would happily risk stretchy pants again.

Treat yourself, treat a friend, or just go to Pionono Bakery to treat your taste buds! The empanadas were sold out so we waited for the fresh batch and it was definitely the best decision! They offer two kinds: beef or chicken. Enjoy it with the sauce if you want heat and another layer of flavor. The filling and crust are perfectly paired and just delicious!! The sweets we tried are equally delicious — flan, chocolate cake, and alfajores! Service was extremely helpful and friendly! The best!! Go and enjoy. It is located in Food-a-rama shopping center.

Chicken Empanadas are fantastic as you can tell. Homemade Peruvian Pepper Hot Sauce makes it POP!!! I’ll order 3 next time.

Super friendly staff and amazing Peruvian and Mexican pastries. There were too many good things to try, but we settled on milhojas, carrot cake with dulce de leche, and chocoflan. Will definitely come back if we’re in the area again! (The coffee in the picture is from another place.)

Beautiful little shop next to Foodarama. I go in for the gluten free tamales and empanadas (not gluten free) all the time. The hot sauce is just perfect. The deserts are amazing too!

We’re vacationing from PA and heard Pionono Bakery made empanadas. They are the BEST empanadas I’ve had. So glad I found this bakery. Thank you so much!!

I was here when I visited Manteo in the summer, best place for lunch, can someone tell me what this dish is called? I dream of making it at home.

Chicken empanadas are absolutely divine! My go-to lunch stop. The shop has a good selection of hard-to-find-elsewhere Peruvian and Mexican goods (I’ve heard great things about Inca Kola) and the desserts are stellar. Don’t forget to ask for the spicy sauce to go with your empanadas—even a small amount adds great depth of flavor.

Stop here for empanadas, carrot cake, or the other delicious goodies they keep in stock! A good selection of Peruvian juices, groceries, and sometimes produce that can be hard to find elsewhere. The folks behind the counter are always friendly and helpful, too!

This new bakery just opened in Manteo. I really enjoyed the food here. The staff was extremely friendly and explained the food really well. They have both Mexican and Peruvian foods and spices. I would definitely check this out if you are in Manteo. We got carrot cake, Lucuma Mouse Brownie, Chocolate Cake, and a box of Alfajores. I can’t wait to go back and try the empanadas.
