After the omakase, has about 60 pieces could have done maybe two dozen more, but didn’t want to hate myself in later. Heard the current record is over 200 by a tiny Asian women of course . Friendly cheerful atmoaphere, good experience.
This time, the chef assigned to us was a young guy who seemed completely uninterested in interacting. He avoided conversation even when we tried to engage. Meanwhile, we could clearly see other guests being entertained and having a much better experience. We were simply ignored.
Service was also poor. When we wanted another beer, we tried for at least five minutes to get the attention of a waiter. She was clearly busy but also literally ignored us. In the end, I had to ask the chef, who looked confused and unsure what to do.
The quality of the food has gone down. The fish is still fresh and tastes good, but the amount of rice in the sushi is excessive and clearly designed to limit how much you can eat. I understand the “unlimited” concept and that costs need to be controlled, but this Wagyu steak sushi was just ridiculous. Way too much rice, barely any meat.
We didn’t eat much because we weren’t hungry. I personally had only 8 extra pieces of sushi and was not planning to eat piles of rice. Still, we were told we’d be charged $10 for every three pieces of unfinished rice. Fine, that’s the policy – but it feels absurd considering we’ve probably spent several thousand dollars across this and the other location over time.
After the meal, the chef just walked away without saying thank you or goodbye. We had to flag down someone else just to get the bill.
Extremely disappointing experience. SourAji in the East Village was not bad at all, but I strongly suggest avoiding the SourAji West location. We won’t be coming back.
Ambiance (5/5): Super well-lit and low volumes. A long table onlooking 3 chefs with a few seats that faced the window.
Food (5/5): Every single piece of sushi was delicious. Nothing needed to be changed. The rice was perfectly cooked, wonderfully portioned. The meal came with a half piece of mochi ice cream. During the AYCE sushi part, it was split into 3 waves to order: lean tuna, fatty tuna, and wagyu. For $98, the unlimited sake and the AYCE sushi was well-worth the high quality sushi and exceptional service provided.
Food is fresh, people are super kind especially if you do multiple visits.
All you can drink sweet and dry sake plus beers is amazing.
Bathroom is 1 person at a time.
The 3 course at the end is amazing. You decide how many pieces you want of each 1, before the course is made and served.
Fantastic experience, would highly highly recommend!
The staff were extremely kind and very friendly.
The quality was unbelievably good for the price, and they kept asking if we needed more drinks.
The chef was incredibly kind and a great person.
It was a happy Tuesday night.
