I recently ordered the Maharaja Champ Masala, Mughlai Chicken Korma, Fish 81, and Chicken Tikka Masala, and everything was genuinely excellent. The flavors were rich, well-balanced, and tasted fresh. Each dish had its own distinct profile, and nothing felt overly oily or heavy. The meats were tender, the sauces were flavorful, and the overall quality was impressive.

A truly satisfying meal — I’d definitely order again!

The food at Maharaja is among the best Indian food in Hobart. No doubt. Come and support this amazing Tassie business, and enjoy their very tasty dishes and friendly service. Come here often and recommend regularly.

Don’t let the strange entry stop you, this restaurant has amazing Indian food and is well worth the visit!

To enter, you’ll need to go in the door and head up the stairs. Follow the sign.

Each dish we had was delish and we had a hard time choosing from the great menu. Authentic dishes and wish we could have eaten more!

The atmosphere is slightly odd, definitely a sit down restaurant, but with paper table cloths and I can imagine it gets quite noisy when busy.

Friendly service.

Everyone likes a home cooked meal at the end of day, especially when you are spent on a holiday. This restaurant felt close to that. Plenty of tables to sit, namesake decor and great service.
Paneer Pakora was the starter we tried, which was nicely fried. It lacked a bit of salt, however went well with the mint chutney. For main course we had Roti, Amritsari Kulcha, Veg Kurma and Veg Biriyani. The stuffing in Kulcha was sumptuous and Kurma tasted amazing. It was easily the best dish we tasted over here. The Veggies was cooked in perfection that is Mughalai sauce. The spices were infused well into the rice and it tasted good. Bit closer to how a Pulao would taste, but Biriyani in texture. We enjoyed it. Generous portions, standard prices, everyone seemed to be enjoying their time while we were over there.

Upstairs in an air conditioned old building, with green chairs with metal backs ( Not the most comfy) The service was quick and the food piping hot and medium spice allowed you to taste the delicious tender meats. The Naan bread was so moist and not chewy like most I have had. The sauces were delicious.

Probably the worst Indian food I’ve had in Hobart in a while. Maharaja used to make good quality food but the standards have fallen way down!

Ordered a Veggie Korma and Chicken Vindaloo and neither curries were fresh. The vegetables were old and had a foul smell. The vegetables smelled like it had been cooked and been sitting out for a long time and then mixed with the korma sauce.

The chicken was an overly red colour, tough and chewy. They use too much red dye in their chicken vindaloo and chicken that is not fresh. The picture you see here is barely eaten food – after spending so much money on dinner.

In a cost of living crisis, restaurants need to understand that customers deserve fresh, healthy foods, worth the price they are charging.

We called the restaurant to advise and asked for a refund but they only offered us the same meal, that had the same issues

Pleasant experience (had the whole restaurant to myself). Nice elevator piano music playing. Service was good. All food arrived in 10 minutes. food had little taste . I suspect the prawn vindaloo might have been microwaved.

You can tell that great care was given when preparing these meals. Everything was delicious and catered to our needs.
The waiter was very hospitable and pointed out the many vegan options (for myself).
I am reluctant to give 5 stars as there are no labels for vegan or gluten free dishes on the menu.
My partner really enjoyed the tandoori combination and garlic naan.
Bonus: Complimentary papadums
