Very local place, cute atmosphere and everything was super tasty!
The staff were pleasant and polite, and you could easily see the pride they took in their establishment and its years of trading, and which was spotlessly clean.
The haddock was deliciously fresh and a good portion size, as were the chips, which were fresh, crispy, and plump. The mushy peas were thick, with a plain pea taste, just as they should be. The battered sausage had a thick batter that clung to the perfectly cooked sausage inside, and the beef dripping always makes a difference. The fishcakes were made from a mash of potato and fish, and they were a good size, though the beef dripping did cling to the batter.
There is also a large pay-and-display car park right next door, so even though the chippy is situated in the heart of the city, it’s ideally located for those not so steady on their legs.

The chippy is about a 5 to 10 minute walk from city centre.
I would say the chippy is very good. The fish and chips were good quality and at a fair price.
There is seating indoors with a few tables and window seats on the ground floor and more seating upstairs
If you like your fish and chips this place is worth checking out.
Parking on the car park adds a fiver straight away.
Cod and chips is the preferred route but I think Haddock is mains up this neck of the woods.
Delivered on a tray – somewhat different but I guess it’s aimed at the tourist that comes to York, but a plate would have been classier.
Fish, didn’t look like the cod I’m used to eating although I did query it and was told it was.
Overall it was OK.
I was touched! Hospitality like this is rarely found these days! Thank you ❤️
Second visit to Sea Catcher after not being in York since 2019, again the experience exceeded our expectations as we received top quality, excellent fish, with good portions. Very hospitable and accommodating staff, evidently they want all customers to have a great meal. Seating for 35 inside at the same prices as takeaway, with cutlery and condiments provided.
If you are considering Drakes, Mr Chippy etc, simply give them a miss if you’re willing to walk the relatively short distance to Clarence Street.
P.S. Toilet was clean and tidy.
