The Chippy Tour
York is a stunning walled city, founded by the ancient Romans, and truly a beautiful place to visit. Thankfully, we had a lovely dry day to visit The Sea Catcher, where we ate our meals from the back of a pickup truck, though there is also a lovely seating area inside the chippy.

The staff were pleasant and polite, and you could easily see the pride they took in their establishment and its years of trading, and which was spotlessly clean.

The haddock was deliciously fresh and a good portion size, as were the chips, which were fresh, crispy, and plump. The mushy peas were thick, with a plain pea taste, just as they should be. The battered sausage had a thick batter that clung to the perfectly cooked sausage inside, and the beef dripping always makes a difference. The fishcakes were made from a mash of potato and fish, and they were a good size, though the beef dripping did cling to the batter.

There is also a large pay-and-display car park right next door, so even though the chippy is situated in the heart of the city, it’s ideally located for those not so steady on their legs.

Went to this chippy based on the fact it has the highest average Google reviews in York.

The chippy is about a 5 to 10 minute walk from city centre.

I would say the chippy is very good. The fish and chips were good quality and at a fair price.
There is seating indoors with a few tables and window seats on the ground floor and more seating upstairs
If you like your fish and chips this place is worth checking out.

Looked at various chippies online and decided to give this a go.

Parking on the car park adds a fiver straight away.

Cod and chips is the preferred route but I think Haddock is mains up this neck of the woods.

Delivered on a tray – somewhat different but I guess it’s aimed at the tourist that comes to York, but a plate would have been classier.

Fish, didn’t look like the cod I’m used to eating although I did query it and was told it was.

Overall it was OK.

The restaurant is small but nice and clean. The staff is nice and the food is good but a little to oily. If coming with a group you need to call ahead. Take away is available. It’ situated next to the car park and around 20-25 minutes walk from York centre. If busy expect queues for a table or to get your order.

ACTING UP
Called into the shop with my daughter, one hour before her interview at York Uni. I explained that we just wanted somewhere to sit for half an hour. The owner made us a cup of tea and said it’s on the house! if your daughter comes here, she’ll never go hungry!
I was touched! Hospitality like this is rarely found these days! Thank you ❤️

Cheery, quintessential Yorkshire service. On the edge of the tourist area; witnessed a table of Tour Coach drivers eating their lunch upstairs while the tourist cluster into the pricier cafes and restaurants. Lovely owner, cooked- to- order battered fish and hand-cut (?) chips. Perfect.

Only thing that is better than the fantastic food is the service! Great value and very good fish and chips. Stunning place.

Amongst the best fish and chips experience in the country.

Second visit to Sea Catcher after not being in York since 2019, again the experience exceeded our expectations as we received top quality, excellent fish, with good portions. Very hospitable and accommodating staff, evidently they want all customers to have a great meal. Seating for 35 inside at the same prices as takeaway, with cutlery and condiments provided.

If you are considering Drakes, Mr Chippy etc, simply give them a miss if you’re willing to walk the relatively short distance to Clarence Street.

It is fish&chips take away with tables inside (first floor). Lovely fish in crispy batter with chips and mushy peas topped with tartare sauce made a good ending to a nice day. Charming gentleman helped us to make sure choice and delivered food straight to the table upstairs.

P.S. Toilet was clean and tidy.
