How good is this place? We went twice in one week after discovering it! The sushi is as good as you could ever want it. Wakame salad is clearly not the pre-made kind, you can tell by the flavor. We had fried octopus, spicy tuna roll, the crunchy roll that was half tuna half eel and an assortment of other rolls. Everything was delicious and fresh! The thing that really impressed me though is how unbelievably good their spicy mayo is. You can tell great care is taken in sourcing of ingredients and preparation, this coming from somebody with 30 years in the restaurant business. I have not one negative thing to say about this place. What a gem!

Gari of Sushi is absolutely the best! Great staff, cozy atmosphere, and the BEST miso soup I’ve ever had. Wish I could give this place a million stars.

If you like sushi, you need to try Gari Sushi. Don’t let the modest exterior fool you. I was also suspicious the first time I came here. It is some of the best sushi and Japanese comfort food around.

The Tsunami Salmon is an absolute must-try. I have had it more than 20 times. The flavors are fresh and delicious. Their udon is perfectly rich and comforting, and the seaweed salad is one of the best. Every dish is made with so much care, and you can taste the difference.

What really makes Gari Sushi special, though, is the people. The owner and his sister run the place almost entirely on their own, and their dedication is unmatched. They treat every customer like family, making each visit feel personal and welcoming.

This place deserves way more attention. If you’re in the area, don’t hesitate—Gari Sushi is a hidden gem that’s worth discovering. Once you try it, you’ll keep coming back. That’s certainly what happened to me.

I ordered four rolls and an appetizer through the DoorDash online order. My order was confirmed and I was told my food would be ready in one hour at 8 o’clock. At 7:45 I left my house to go pick up my order and then noticed a text message had come through 20 minutes prior saying my food is ready for pick up. I called the restaurant and explained that I would not be there for another 15 minutes and then I had a 15 minute drive home And that my food was supposed to be ready For pick up at 8 PM not 7:40pm And that I was still 15 minutes away. Since the food had been made so early, my concern was that by the time I would get it home, it would have been sitting out for over 45 minutes and we got tempura rolls which when they’re left inside Styrofoam they get soggy.

I asked the owner if he could remake the sushi and he said no, you can cancel the order. I explained that my family had been waiting for an hour and we are very hungry and excited about sushi and he refused to remake the order and gave me the option to either come pick up And eat it mushy or cancel the order and be hungry. I argued that that was terrible service and that we were still very hungry and wanting to get our sushi because we spent 75 The money back it’s about our dinner. He told me to come down and he would remake it.

I got there at 8:01 and was asked to have a seat while he “remade the food”. Less than 10 minutes later, they came out with four “new roles” of sushi And sent me on my way. When I got home, it was very clear that Had not been remade and that they had just reheated the previous rolls. The tempura had no crunch. It was just a big ball of mush. Very disappointing terrible service never coming back.

These businesses take all the good with services like Uber and DoorDash and except none of the bad. At $75 for $10 worth of supplies. This business owner was willing to throw away a long-term customer and future business. Because they’re not willing to own the fact that DoorDash made a mistake and they needed to follow the timeframe on the order or people will have to eat cold food.

Lastly, I called back to request a refund and he refused.

This used to be one of my go to sushi places YEARS ago (maybe around 2006 or 2007). And let me say, we do eat sushi quite a bit.

My son got gyoza that was not bad.

I ordered the salmon avocado roll which was ok but really small and probably not something I’d order again. I also got the crunch eel which also just ok but the best out of the 4 rolls my wife and I ordered.

My wife ordered the dynamite roll and the spicy tuna roll. Right off the bat she noticed the tuna was looking way redder than usual and she always gets spicy tuna every time we get sushi. She took a bite and immediately noticed that is tasted fishier than any tuna she’s had. I tasted it and it tasted alright at first but the aftertaste had some kind of strong chemical taste to it and the taste stuck in my mouth throughout the whole meal actually kind of causing my stomach to get a little upset. I took a bite of the ginger hoping that would take the taste out of my mouth but it did not. She couldn’t even finish her rolls, unfortunately they both had the same tuna on it. She attempted to scrape the tuna of but that did not help.

Honestly the worse sushi I’ve had in a very long time. The workers were nice but I think they were short on staff because it did take a long time to get our food and they now serve everything on Styrofoam plates. I was excited to eat here tonight but unfortunately I’d probably never go back after that experience.

Best sushi I’ve ever had. A little pricey, but so worth it. It doesn’t look like much from outside but inside is beautiful. The couple who runs the place is so nice. One chef prepares everything and he is a true master of his craft.

Took my family of four here on a Friday night and had a fantastic experience. The fish is incredibly fresh and high quality, and you could visualize the chef’s precision in every dish. There were only two people on staff, but server was kind and attentive, making us feel right at home. It’s an unassuming spot with an old-school sushi bar feel definitely not trying to modernize, just amazing sushi done right. We’ll definitely be back.

This place feels like I’m back in Japan, their sushi, udon, ramen and drinks are authentic and just as good as how the Japanese people make it. I will say it is a bit overpriced compared to Japan but I get why. Keep up the great work Gari family!

Lovely restaurant with a magical and quality Japanese authentic chef! 🙂 Truely a diamond in the rough as far as Tacoma and restaurants go! The dinner was a elegant array of different dishes and fish, ask the chef for new things he’s really creative and loves to do specialty requests! 😉
