Had the 17 pieces omakase. Menu was standard and the items were decent. Serving size of the sushi pieces varied from small to regular.
Not much conversation or interaction with the chefs as they were quiet and busy making the foods. I had better omakase experience with chefs.
Decent prices for the amount of food.
The interior is small; feels like proper Japan. But it’s a comfortable noise level — some quiet background music, which makes it easy to talk.
The omakase chefs don’t really explain much about the food — they just name the fish and dish when they serve you. You can see how they prepare everything right in front of you. The pace of the courses are good. Nice attention to detail from the chefs: I’ve been here twice and both times when the chef noticed that I was left-handed, they placed the food at the different side of the plate.
Service is attentive and quick.
The second time I was here, we were celebrating my sister’s birthday. At the end, they dimmed the lights, switched from their mellow instrumental background music to 50 Cents – In Da Club playing on high volume, gave my sister a sparkler, and served her another sushi course with a candle, and the entire team danced to the song for about 30 seconds. Best birthday recognition I’ve ever seen from a restaurant staff.
You can tell the chefs here care deeply about every detail — from the freshness of the fish to the pacing of the courses. It’s refined but not pretentious, and every plate feels like a work of art.
And the best part? For the quality and experience you’re getting, the price is unbelievably reasonable. I kept thinking, “How is this not double the cost?”
I’m already plotting my next trip back to NYC just to eat here again. If only Shiki would open a location in California — I’d be their most loyal customer. 10/10, completely unforgettable experience
That said, the sushi was really fresh! The chef was friendly and attentive, on top of the ginger, and the waitress stayed consistent of refilling water. Aside from the corkage hiccup, the pricing felt reasonable for the quality. I ordered a Wagyu hand roll and the Wagyu with foie gras on toast, both were AMAZING!
Overall, I still had a good experience and would recommend it, just be aware of the corkage fee if you’re planning to BYOB.
The food overall was good, and we believe that in different circumstances, we would enjoy it more.
One thing that stood out to me was that when the chef realized that I was left-handed, he started positioning the rolls for me in a position where it was easier for me to pick up with my chopsticks. Such a small little detail, but one that I noticed and appreciated so much! Even when I was in Tokyo, the chef sometimes forgot to give me the roll the left-handed way.
My siblings told the staff that it was my birthday, so towards the end of the service, they dimmed the lights, played In da Club, and gave me a sparkler to play with, as well as an extra roll.
The nigiri itself was delicious, the fish was so fresh and flavorful. My favorite was the Toro & Caviar and A5 Wagyu & Uni pieces. My experience here was great and I would highly recommend this establishment!
