Dessert was just as incredible as the main courses—thoughtfully crafted and the perfect ending to an already flawless meal. The sunset views paired with the special table we reserved made the entire evening feel magical and intimate, far exceeding anything we imagined.
This was one of those meals you think about long after the honeymoon is over. I can’t wait to return to St. Croix just to experience Ama again. Simply WOW.
These are words that should not start a review for what was supposed to be an incredible celebration dinner for my wife and I. After spending $250 on the entire experience, “fine, I guess” is not what my sentiment regarding Ama at Cane Bay should be.
We had food that was twice as good at Savant and Off the Wall, both for less than half of the price.
We had the last reservation of the evening, and it definitely felt like it. I will try to make the review brief as my intent is not to blast Ama, but it is to help other travelers that are hoping to have an amazing time on St. Croix like we did.
The ambience: Pretty awesome. Really neat to sit right next to the water and have dinner. The night sky was beautiful and we had a perfect view of the waxing crescent moon during our dinner.
The drinks: Not very good, uninspired, and expensive. I got two different cocktails, and both left me wishing I was at Savant or Off the Wall where they had excellent cocktails.
The menu: Small, but lots that looked intriguing.
The appetizers: We ordered mussels and ceviche. The mussels were delicious and what has helped Ama to earn that second star. The ceviche was “okay” and the chips were stale that came with it. Again, this would be fine if we were at a dive bar, not for a “once a year” type of meal.
The entrees: My wife ordered the blackened mahi, to which she was informed that they did not have it, and it was wahoo instead, which she does not prefer. So as an alternative, she ordered “Buddha’s Feast” as a vegetarian dish, sounds interesting and probably has lots of great local vegetables expertly prepared, given that it’s called a “Feast”. I ordered one of the more expensive items, the Lobster Pasta for $50.
The wait for the food was long and we didn’t see our server for probably ~20 minutes. She did apologize when she brought the food, and indicated that the kitchen was “getting caught up on a few things”.
Buddha’s Feast: Extremely disappointing, a few pieces of broccolini, pureed sweet potatoes, and a couple of other items. Probably less than 200 calories of food total, one of the worst entrees I had ever seen. We were trying to have a nice evening, so we did not send it back or complain, at this point we were ready to get on with the rest of our trip.
Lobster Pasta: It was good. But again, I would expect GREAT for a $50 entree.
Overall, it would have been fine if we spend $100 or so (like many other meals on the island), but for $250, I expected EXCELLENCE and we had a mediocre (at best) experience.
TLDR: Avoid Ama at Cane Bay, too many amazing experiences to be had on this island without wasting your time and money here.
