The menu was fantastic and all the food was delicious. The portions are generous and include bread and a side salad. I can’t say enough about our incredible staff who helped, a team of 2-I am searching for their names as I post this. Truly magnificent experience! Thank you!
The ceiling are ginormous and a bit dusty, look above you when they seat you.
Worth a visit. 🙂
I ordered the cheese appetizer. A small board. A good spread. Cheeses with names you do not rush through. Soft ones. Sharp ones. Things that ask you to slow down and pay attention.
Then the steak came. Or eventually came. Forty minutes passed, or something that felt like forty minutes. It was strange given how few people were there. Still, when it arrived, it was worth the wait. The steak was serious. Heavy. Cooked exactly how I asked.
One of the best steaks I have had. The garlic mashed potatoes did not survive long. They were eaten, swiftly and without ceremony.
The service was warm and kind. Not forced. The kind that makes you feel welcome without hovering. One small thing. I wish they had beer on tap. They do not. But the bottle and can selection is solid.
The steak costs about what the steakhouse next door charges. But here there are other dishes that cost less. More choices. More paths through the menu. There is also a kids menu. They serve a mean grilled cheese.
I enjoyed the evening. I really did. I left full and calm. I was also a little sad to see the place so empty. It deserves more people sitting by the fire.
Food: most meals are delicious but pricey. Avoid the charcuterie. The name is French for a specific type of meat but the U.S expectation is a plate with a mix of cheese, meat and crackers. You will only get the meat, some crackers, pickled onions and some nuts that gave me a strange rash on my face.
Drinks: Great cocktails!
Atmosphere/service: the service depends of course on who is your waitress. Two times, the manager ignored me while speaking with the rest of my party.
The dinner rolls that came out while we were waiting for our main course were average, but still good. After that everything steadily improved and provided an elevated experience worthy of a celebration. Salad was fresh, dressing was good, and starting with French onion soup, the food was very tasty and fun to eat. We both got different chicken dishes, and they were something to go back for. Presentation was nice and we had fun evening together. We both ordered creme brulee for dessert and it was actually a little different flavor than we expected but made well and we loved it.
Service was friendly and knowledgeable, which was expected at this level of venue, but doesn’t always happen these days so that was nice. Overall, this is a great value for the cost. This doesn’t necessarily fit our frugal food budget but for a celebration meal this was very well worth the cost.
Definitely check out Vera Mae’s Bistro!
