On my first visit, I waited to be seated for more than 15 minutes. During this wait, nobody approached me at all, so I left without being served.
On my second visit, we were seated in a timely manner. We came for the brunch on a Sunday.
Both of us ordered the same drink (Tropical Momosa), but they clearly looked and tasted very different from one another (see picture). For a $9 Momosa, I’d expect some level of consistency.
For the food, we ordered the Breakfast Burrito and the Monte Cristo.
The Breakfast Burrito was $14.99 plus an additional $3.50 for the brisket option. For an $18.49 burrito, I was very underwhelmed. The plating presentation was displeasing (see picture). Having to pay extra for the brisket, I’d expect a good meat ratio in the Burrito, but it had little to no meat at all in some areas (see picture).
The Monte Cristo was actually very good. Both presentation and taste were consistent with the pricing.
The service times were close to 30 minutes for our order. The waiter told us they had a small kitchen and they weren’t able to efficiently serve the number of customers seated due to it. Only half of the seating area was occupied at the time.
Overall, the experience, food, and pricing do not warrant a desire to return. Nor would I recommend Meat Hook BBQ to anyone.
The salad with chicken was very good and a huge portion.
Our service was great and they kept our drinks filled!
Try the Meat Hook BBQ the next time you’re looking for delicious food and great service.
Close to the Westerner Club this would be a great place to eat before you get your dance on!
Sauces
Having two sauce options keeps it simple. The spicy/hot one is more of a southern black pepper vinegar kick vs a pure jalapeno or other slap.
The main, original sauce (sorry I never locked in the name) is sweet and I assume loved by many. Very safe and sweet.
Food
The brisket was smoked well. Could have been more smoke, but tasted very good. Pieces I got were less lean but I prefer that. I could see others thinking it was too fatty, again I enjoyed it and the amount.
The Mac and cheese were good. My least fav of the order. They are a white, almost powdery and wet cheese mix. Served cold (compared to the beans) lots of preferences there but I enjoyed it. I’m more of a warm, creamy cheddar gooey type.
The BBQ bacon beans were on point and exactly what you would expect from a BBQ place. I almost added some of the spicy BBQ sauce to it, but no need. It was great.
The corn bread muffins were good. Main complaint is they are tiny but that’s probably for the better vs the square tray approach.
Vibe
Overall the team did great and I am sure will dust off the “we are new” vibe soon. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Might help to add a door bell or visual since I was able to sneak up to the front without a welcome (didn’t take away from my impression because everyone was huddled around watching some sort of BBQ nacho thing being created)
The bathroom was clean
The outdoor area looked great. It was a little too windy and chilly so I didn’t sit there. I notice there is a fire pit and the covered back porch walls all close so that’ll be great into winter.
Feedback would be around the parking lot being darker and the two doors on the side both have dark grey text on black backgrounds. It was hard to read that they were an exit. Took me a second to realize the front door was around…the front (my bad) so maybe more signs if you don’t want people to flow through the side doors. In general the inside was also on the darker side but that fit the vibe. Could illuminate the walk from the front door to the ordering line for folks that have bad eyes. Just an idea.
Great job!
