We stumbled upon La Goulue after a snowy walk through Central Park and couldn’t have been happier. The restaurant is quaint, charming, and full of classic French ambience—exactly what you hope for on a winter day.

The crab salad was beautifully fresh with a lovely vinaigrette, and the onion soup was outstanding—deep, rich, and topped with perfectly melted Gruyère. A glass of Chassagne-Montrachet paired wonderfully, and the bread alone was phenomenal.

A delightful lunch and a place we’d happily return to. Highly recommend.

A very mediocre experience with upscale prices. Appetizers were great with classic French class and delectable flavors( frogs legs in particular). Mains, however, were mediocre in quality. For example I got a steak and it tasted out of the freezer. Expect to pay about $150 per person and for that price it’s unacceptable. It wasn’t a bad steak but it definitely tasted as it had seen fresher days.

Service was also mediocre. The manager who was serving as well was great, but the server was horrible and impatient. He wasn’t mean or anything but twice he didn’t take time to explain the menu to the point where dessert was an issue. I was in middle of asking him about what it is and he just grabbed the menu and said you will like it. Turns out it was a flan which I never like no matter how good it was.

Overall I do NOT recommend this place. It’s overpriced and does NOT live up to proper standards.

The French are known for their incredible variety and quality of cheeses, so seeing cheddar on a lobster salad was a real shock, it felt like a slap in the face. I honestly wonder who came up with that idea. The beef tartare was just okay, especially considering I had the same dish at La Grande Boucherie the day before and it was significantly better; the quality of the meat wasn’t even comparable. The beer was warm, and the chocolate mousse tasted like anything but chocolate, not good at all. The service, however, was good. Overall, I expected much more from a French restaurant.

We had dinner at La Goulue with my girlfriend and it was a wonderful experience. The service was smooth and nice especially our runner César, who was very friendly and took the time to explain the dishes and meet all our expectations. The manager also gave us a very warm welcome. Highly recommend it!

I wish I could write a good review of this place. I booked here for my birthday dinner. The two female hosts at the front didn’t speak or greet my friend when he walked in. Normal maybe if we were in a fast casual bistro in lower Manhattan but for a quoted ‘fine dining restaurant’ is a pretty bad first impression. We get seated and the food is good and the service adequate, nothing super special or above and beyond but not anything too crazy to complain about.
The problems started when the bill came, all looked fine except a $52 charge split into two for still water. This was immediately confusing 1) because no one had ordered still water 2) we were never asked tap or still like every other restaurant I have been has asked 3) Water was being poured from a pitcher not a bottle. The second issue was they had charged us for one more soda than we had ordered, the rest of the check was accurate. Mistakes happen all the time, we just wanted the bill reflected accurately and did not ask for any concessions on this.
Once we approached that’s when the problem started, they tried to say we did ask for still water. The waiter continued to press us and say we did until we eventually asked for the manager. You would think a manager in a fine dining restaurant would have decorum? Well think again at La Goulue.
At one point, the same friend who had not been greeted had been identified by one of the managers as being the person who ordered the still which again, never happened. When we walked in he was the only one at the table, with one singular glass of water that had been poured from the tap. When my friend went over after hearing the man say ‘the guy with the big hood’ was asking for it the manager gets up in his face and says “Who do you think you are coming to me in my restaurant? Go sit down.” He looked like he wanted to punch my friend in the face. In years of eating at restaurants much nicer and more acclaimed than this I have never seen this level of pushback and hostility from a supposed manager. Eventually we did get the bill rectified but it took 30 minutes over something that in a restaurant around the corner with lower prices would immediately take off.
The restaurant itself is beautiful and the ambiance is great, but the managers are horrific.
I would never come back here and I would steer clear if you’re coming with a big party.

La Goulue is a beautiful French restaurant in New York with an elegant atmosphere and great service. I was pleasantly surprised by the sushi,it was fresh, light, and perfectly prepared. The lobster salad was also excellent, full of flavor and presented beautifully. A wonderful spot to enjoy a mix of classic French dishes with some unexpected but very well-done.

HOW TO GET IN: I did a walk in at 8 pm on a Saturday and did not have to wait. The service is good and the food is good too, we had French onion soup and tried the soufflé. They were satisfying, and we did a walk in and were seating promptly. The manager was very nice and gracious and greeted us and made sure we were doing okay. They also have shows in the back which I think is the best part. I had no idea and saw they had a cabaret. I would for sure come back here for an intimate dinner with the girls. They did a wonderful job with the show especially.

We spent $200 per person for the dinner. The reservation was made under my Asian last name and my relative arrived before us. When we opened the restaurant door literally hit at my guest’s chair while there are many other empty tables available in a very cold night. My Caucasian husband talked to the lead and switched to a better table afterwards. Later my guest told me once he entered the restaurant, the lead already knew he was with me because apparently we were the only two Asian in that restaurant that night.
The table service and food were good though.

Unfortunately, our experience was quite below our expectations.

The staff was not friendly or attentive the place felt crowded the food was good quality but very standard. None of the meals were interesting or impressive, just regular meals at higher prices and of good quality.

Also I left a comment that my mother had a birthday 77 years and there was absolutely no attention to that from the staff. Waiter was coming every few minutes with questions, which got a little annoying and his communication was far from delicate.

Had an incredible meal w/ top notch service at this high end yet understated French bistro.

My friends were very happy w/ their lamb and steak poivre entres. I ordered the pan seared skate w/ parsley potatoes off the daily special menu. Best fish I’ve had in a while.

The service was attentive and helpful through-out the evening. I will be back there again next time in NY to see what tasty fish special is coming out of their impressive kitchen.

Only (mild) complaint is that the seating is very tight in this obviously popular eatery. But – frankly – it only added to its warm atmosphere.
