My husband & I sat down and ordered waters and proceeded to look at the menu. Immediately we were a bit taken back by the pricing. We had heard decent things so we wanted to give it a try.
My husband ordered the French Dip Steak Sandwich & I ordered the Reuben. The waitress asked us “would you like French fries or coleslaw as the side” NOT would you like to ADD French fries or coleslaw… huge difference. (& while I did not seek out to find a side on the menu as sandwiches generally come with a side at the pricing they have.. the server should have been clear about the fact that they were add-ons and not something that was included!)
The steak sandwich was rather small, my husband complained that the steak looks like it’s from a steak-um box and the French dip au-jous didn’t have much flavor to it. My sandwich was better, however the coleslaw did not taste good. It reminded me of expired mayo. I was very disappointed because I really love coleslaw.
When the bill came that’s when we saw that the French fries and coleslaw (which I didn’t even eat) were ADDED on. This is something that should be clarified prior to ordering. (& yes THIS WAS ON THE WAITRESS! As I said she specifically asked what we wanted as a side, NOT “would you like to add fries?”.
The place is trying to be fancy all while having drunks at the bar that are hitting on one of the waitresses & actively inviting them over. Pick a lane, because that’s crazy. (I wouldn’t have had an issue with this scenario had the waitress herself not committed to going over to hang out, that was incredibly gross to be announcing your future shenanigans with a customer) Our waitress forgot about us several times (this is not up for debate, no amount of information from the owner will change the fact that our waiters simply did not pay attention to us) We ran out of water and another woman had to come over to help… all while the other server was still actively flirting with the bar patrons. I understand some of that is for tips, but it was crazy to hear her telling him she’ll try to go over soon, just not today. Extremely disappointed to see the check, but honestly the food wasn’t anything to write home about to begin with. So I doubt we’ll be heading back there.
(It’s been a long time since we frequented here & To say things are the same is crazy.) Too much has changed since the last owners were here. I really tried to like it, I wanted to like it because it’s a “Thomaston staple”… but I just didn’t. I definitely felt as though my money was wasted (& for the next few days both my husband and I repeatedly made comments about how we regretted our decision to waste our date here.)
Overall, I was not impressed and I’m even more unimpressed with the owners reply because it’s a joke. He can tell himself what he needs to make himself feel better about having expensive food that doesn’t taste good. If you want a delicious steak grinder Main Street Deli in Terryville is DELICIOUS!
Highly, highly recommend Black Rock Tavern!
