When in Chicago, deep dish is non-negotiable.

We debated between Lou Malnati’s and Giordano’s, not a light decision when you genuinely know your pizza. Having eaten pizza in Italy and New York, we approached Chicago deep dish with curiosity… and a little apprehension.

We chose Lou’s, and it was absolutely the right call.

We started with mozzarella bites and fried ravioli, both divine. Crisp, golden exteriors giving way to molten, perfectly seasoned centres. These weren’t token appetizers; they set the tone properly.

Then came the showstopper: the Mike’s Hot Honey deep dish.

We ordered a medium.

It was enormous.

The kind of pizza that makes you instantly question your confidence. A box for leftovers was inevitable, and welcomed.

This wasn’t just sauce and cheese in a tall crust. It was layered properly: rich tomato sauce, indulgent cheese, Italian sausage that brought real depth and savoury richness, and that classic Chicago staple, giardiniera, cutting through with a bright, tangy heat. Then the sweet-spicy drizzle of hot honey tied it all together beautifully.

It was bold without being overwhelming. Indulgent without being heavy. Structured, balanced, and incredibly satisfying.

Deep dish scepticism? Gone.

Add in the prime North Michigan Avenue location, fantastic service, and a buzzing yet relaxed ambiance, and this became more than just “trying Chicago pizza”, it was an experience.

Chicago deep dish has officially earned our respect.

And from people who’ve eaten pizza in Italy and New York… that’s not said lightly

Stopped by Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria on Michigan Ave and had an awesome experience. We started with the ravioli bites, which were absolutely amazing—crispy, flavorful, and the perfect appetizer.

Then we ordered the Mike’s Hot Honey signature deep dish pizza… wow. The buttery crust was incredible, and the sweet heat from the hot honey took it to another level. Easily one of the best deep dish pizzas I’ve had.

Our bartender was also our server, and she was fantastic—super friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. I ordered a Moscow mule and it was perfect!

Definitely recommend if you’ve never been here before! PS! They can ship these pizzas to your house!

Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria absolutely lived up to the hype. I had their classic deep dish pizza with added pepperoni, and it was perfectly cooked, rich, hearty, and incredibly satisfying. The sauce was thick and flavorful with just a hint of spice that tied everything together beautifully.
The garlic bread was wonderful, simple, warm, and packed with flavor. On top of the great food, the service was excellent, quick, friendly, and attentive. They made helpful recommendations and checked in often without being overbearing. A classic Chicago experience done right.

The hostess told us waiting time is 45 mins so we sat down to wait. After waiting I saw those who was waiting before us had all been seated so I went to the counter to check, the host rudely told me “not yet”. Finally we were seated, the server was friendly. We ordered an appetiser and two personal pizza. The food was tasty but the crust was too hard in my opinion. When couldn’t finish they provide box for take away. After leaving my wife realised that her beanie was missing so I went back down to the counter to check. Again was greeted rudely by another host that didn’t even check much but told me “don’t have”. So I went in to ask the server, he was kind enough to help look and asked around.

I felt that the restaurant should provide better training to the host/hostess to have better manners as they are the first customers interaction and impression.

Nice place. A lot of locals recommended this place as the place to try my first chicago deep dish pizza. It was good! Loved the crust and how the tomato sauce had chunks of tomatoes in it. Wouldn’t say its my favorite style of pizza, but I’m glad I was able to try the deep dish pizza in Chicago. Lovely staff and cute place to dine at.

We visited Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria during our Chicago trip, and it definitely lived up to its reputation! The place was packed, which shows how popular it is.

We made a reservation in advance, so our table was ready when we arrived — a big plus since the restaurant gets busy fast. We ordered the famous Chicago deep dish pizza and waited about 40 minutes for it, which is pretty standard. It was delicious and definitely a must-try for anyone visiting Chicago!
The ambiance is warm and lively, and the servers were friendly and accommodating throughout our visit.

It’s conveniently located near the Chicago Riverwalk, so it’s a great spot to grab a meal after sightseeing.

There’s also a fun wing photo op outside the store, and someone nearby offers to take and print your photo for a small tip — a cute souvenir to take home.

Overall, it’s a nice place to experience authentic Chicago-style deep dish pizza.

We were really excited to try our first deep dish pizza. Cold winter evening, it seemed like the perfect night to try it! The atmosphere coming here was great, we ordered the classic deep dish, and it was very mid, at best. We got a personal size for two and didn’t even finish it. The salad we got was very good though. Service was a bit weak too, waiter came twice to take our order, so that’s never a good sign (he forgot that he did 10 minutes earlier), and it took 25 minutes to get my draft beer. Overall disappointed in our first experience here.

We came to try this popular spot for deep dish and we also ordered a thin crust with some garlic bread. The garlic bread barely had any garlic on it. We asked for a Caesar salad as well. That was probably one of the best things. The calamari that we ordered was decent, I have had better. Not a bad choice tho. Also ordered some large bone in wings. I believe that is 12 wings and you’re only allowed to choose one flavor. Normally, you would be able to choose 2 with that amount of wings. We picked buffalo and they didn’t have as much sauce. The celery it came with was bit sad looking. Ranch was decent. Overall, the pizza does take an extra 30-40 minutes after you order. The wait time and the taste is not worth it, definitely better to choose from. Especially if you’re a pizza lover! Looks are deceiving.

Just know that if you’re going to this place you’re gonna have to wait a (possibly short) while to be seated. We had to wait about 30 minutes. We got the mozzarella bites for an appetizer; they were great and came out quickly. Both of our pizzas were so good and came out after about 40 minutes or so (our waiter told us about the wait time prior). They were cheesy, the toppings were abundant and the crusts were so buttery and crisp.
We only drank lemonades so we can’t comment on the drink menu.

Downtown is always very crowded, so I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. The pizza takes some time to come out, so it’s best to visit when you’re not in a rush. That said, the pizza itself was very well balanced—clean in flavor and not greasy at all—making it easy and enjoyable to eat without feeling too heavy.
