I found this place while looking for some good food while in Watertown, SD. I really like the location and atmosphere. This place is big, they have multiple sections to the restaurant.
Service was friendly, but not very fast or detailed with orders, but we had a group and we weren’t in a rush, so it didn’t bother me.
We had a group, so we ordered multiple appetizers and I enjoyed everyone I tried. The nachos were my favorite and I’d highly recommend them. So with that, I was excited to try my main coarse. I ordered the Ribeye with garlic mashed potatoes. Unfortunately the potatoes were cold and lacking flavor. The Ribeye was barely warm and hard to eat. It was hard to cut and had a lot of fat and gristle. Which I’ve eaten a lot of steaks including Ribeye at a lot of nice steakhouses and at my home. I understand Ribeye has more fat and marbling compared to other steaks, but this one was different from anything I’ve ever been served. Most of my friends enjoyed their food and I’d like to try some of the other food. My friends sirloin looked really good.
With the location and atmosphere and how much we enjoyed the appetizers, it has a lot of potential. After reading some of the other recent reviews, it seems they just need to dial in a few things and this could be a great restaurant.

I decided to try Maverick Steakhouse in Watertown after seeing it recommended at the hotel where I was staying. The front desk staff said it was a great place, and since I’m a big steak lover, I was excited to check it out. I’ve been to several quality steakhouses in Minnesota like Fogo de Chão and Manny’s steakhouse downtown Minneapolis, so I was looking forward to a similar experience. The photos of the food looked fantastic, and it seemed like a nice spot for my aunt and me to have dinner.
When we arrived, there were only a few other guests, and we were seated quickly. Our waitress was polite but quite young and didn’t seem familiar with the drink menu, which made ordering a bit difficult. We ended up waiting close to an hour for our food, even though the restaurant wasn’t busy.
When my meal finally came, the fries and mashed potatoes were both cold, and the butter they gave me wouldn’t melt, so I had to stir it in. I ordered a 12 oz well-done steak, but it came out very rare and had a lot of gristle. The texture made it seem like the steak was pieced together rather than a solid cut of meat.
Overall, I was really disappointed. I wanted to love this place, especially since it’s one of the few steakhouses in the area, but the long wait, cold food, and poorly cooked steak made for a very underwhelming experience. I hope the restaurant can improve on consistency and quality because the potential is definitely there.

appetizer: Chislic 7/10 I ordered it medium and it arrived well cooked.

my order: Blackened Maverick Fettuccine
A blend of our housemade Alfredo sauce and Cajun seasoning tossed with fettuccine and topped with a sliced blackened Maverick steak. 7/10

Same problem with the cooking of the meat and the seasoning they put on the meat did not mix with the juices of the meat, it was very dry and the seasoning was still undistributed in the meat.

The place was a 10/10. The cleanliness was a 10/10. The atmosphere was a 10/10. The service was an 8/10.

All the waitresses seemed distracted and inattentive. Thank goodness we got the best one. They didn’t come over to ask if we wanted more drinks, etc., until they brought us a pitcher.

Could be a decent place but it doesn’t appear that the staff is trained at all to understand that they are only there to make sure the customers that come through the door are served attentively and with care. Even sitting at the bar, pretty tough to get a drink replenished after the first one, and seriously, good luck getting your steak cooked properly. Same excuse every time. “Sorry, we have someone new working in the kitchen.” Everyone seems friendly enough but, no bueno at these prices.

My recent dinner at Mavericks was quite disappointing. I ordered the brisket Philly with a side of ($2 “upgrade”) onion rings. The pictures on the menu of brisket showed nice slices of meat. My sandwich was laughable. Served on crusty hard and cold bread with the insides sparsely populated with tiny chunks of beef, 3 slivers of green pepper, and maybe six onion slivers. They apparently use the Lil chunks of meat that fall off from slicing the brisket. The sandwich also included what exactly tasted like a frito-lay cheese dip, also sparsely populating the other ingredients.
The bottom of my plate was warm, my onion rings were cool, not yet crusty cold.
We waited a long time for our food, which was okay this night as I was visiting a relative from Minnesota. We had time to visit.
As far as I can tell there were no complaints with the others steaks @3 a bacon cheeseburger and fries, and Walleye fingers with onion rings. For my meal I paid $22 plus a tip, as the wait staff was good.
I just think if you are expecting fine food, don’t. I would never pay that much for a steak unless the chef’s credentials were hanging on the wall. Prime Rib? I wouldn’t dare try. BOH and FOH definitely are not in sync. Either that, the way they operate is messed up.

Honestly, my husband and I were extremely disappointed. We got $150 gift card to Mavericks for Christmas, We went a couple weeks after receiving the gift card and we were really underwhelmed. Normally, we are not the type to be picky with food or complain, however, the handful times we’ve went, we have left dissatisfied. We ordered the brisket nachos for our appetizer and they were dry and way too salty to eat. We both ordered steak but received them dry, over cooked, and with no flavor. To add insult to injury my garlic mashed potatoes were also flavorless and cold. Unfortunately, this establishment is not consistent enough with their food quality and we will not be coming back. It’s truly disappointing because it is a beautiful establishment and it could have so much potential if they were just more consistent with their food, especially with how high their prices are.

Went to Mavericks thinking it would be like the one in Deadwood, SD. I was sadly mistaken. Waitress forgot about us after she brought our menus and brought the bill even before we got our food. Forgot the salad. The food sat in the back for at least 20 minutes and tasted like it. We got a steak ordered medium and it was well done. The pork ribeye was too salty to eat. When we tried to ask for boxes and our bill at the bar the person said she could not help us since she wasn’t our server. Overall no tip was left and we won’t eat there again. Worst Valentine’s meal ever.

The service we received was absolutely trash, virtually non-existent, and it was not even busy! I had to flag down a manager/supervisor just to get service because after almost 90 minutes, we had not received our appetizer or a refill on drinks. As it turned out, our original server never even put in our order… it was over 2 hours after putting in our order that we finally received our entrées (we were actually getting ready to walk out because 5 tables that were seated after us had already been served, with two of them already having paid their bill)! I would NOT recommend going to this place because of the ineptitude of the servers. I will not be coming back!

P.S. To be fair, the food was good, and the manager did comp our bill… those two things are the only reasons contributing to a two-star rating instead of a 1 Star

Hampton was SUCH a generous waiter, with his time, kindness & service. Everyone liked their meal. My brisket nachos weren’t that great, very fatty. But Hampton brought more brisket for me, which was very wonderful.
Ok, ok, ok: but that BROWNIE (w/toffee inside) with ice cream is what DREAMS are made of….seriously. So dangerous! Glad I don’t live here, lol.

We stopped at an odd time, however the menu didn’t have restrictions until it came time to order. I wanted the brisket, was told it’s not usually done until 5, no problem 20 mins. Just before 5, was told it has another 30 mins, okay I’ll wait. A few min later was told I needed to order something else. Garlic mashed potatoes tasted like boiled potatoes, macaroni was hard and flavorless, ordered-medium ribeye steak was cooked well done. Food was mediocre, we’ve been here before and enjoyed it. It will be a while before we are back.
