We had such a lovely experience here. The staff were incredibly warm and attentive, she asked where we were visiting from and gave genuine recommendations based on our group size, without trying to upsell anything unnecessarily.

There was only one lobster left, so we ordered the lobster three ways, which was a great choice. The lobster sashimi was extremely fresh and tender, and the salmon was rich and beautifully flavoured.

I came with a friend and there were two of us. Since my friend doesn’t eat raw food, we added an unagi set a bit later. The staff were very considerate and helped speed up the order to match our dining pace, so my friend didn’t have to wait. Even though it’s a more common dish, my friend said it was cooked really well and tasted great.

We both had a wonderful time and left very happy. On the way out, we also picked up a house-made fridge magnet – $15 and absolutely worth it, cute and well made.

Highly recommend for both the food and the service!

I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant! From the moment we made a reservation, their responsiveness was impressive. The service was exceptional, and the well-organized atmosphere made for a delightful dining experience.

One highlight was when they presented us with a live lobster to confirm its freshness—what a nice touch! Every dish we ordered was delicious, truly exceeding our expectations.

To top it off, they surprised my two daughters with lovely souvenirs when we received the bill. We can’t wait to return!

The food here was super impressive and so was the atmosphere! I was looking around for a decent restaurant in the Hobart area and found this 1 minute away from my accomodation. I had a wonderful time – food was amazing and there was such a good variety of drinks. Highly recommend!

We had such a great dinner experience at Yamashita Japanese Restaurant. The food, service and atmosphere were really nice after a day of exploding Hobart. We definitely recommend the Takoyaki, Miso Eggplant, Chef’s selection Aburi nigiri, Chef’s selection Raw nigiri and the Tempura banana with ice cream as they were all absolutely delicious. We will definitely be back.

Yamashita Hobart is the best Japanese restaurant I’ve ever visited in Australia.
We ordered the Sashimi Don and the Tasmanian M4+ steak. The sashimi was incredibly fresh and clean-tasting, and the steak was perfectly cooked and full of flavour. Every dish was absolutely amazing. I would definitely come back again — this is a spot in Hobart you shouldn’t miss.

Had a great meal here. I ordered the sashimi rice and the foie gras steak rice, both were really good, especially the foie gras rice. The rice was nicely oily and shiny, packed with flavour, and the steak was well cooked with a rich smoky taste. The scallop in the sashimi rice was very fresh and sweet. Overall, very satisfying and I’d definitely come back to try more dishes.

I’ve eaten at this restaurant twice in Hobart! The first time, the owner recommended the short-spined sea urchin, and I instantly fell in love with it. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I came back again for a second visit. The sea urchin is unbelievably delicious—rich, sweet, and melt-in-your-mouth. Today I even got the last serving of the day, which felt like such good luck!

The sukiyaki was wonderful too, perfectly balanced between sweet and savory—I ended up drinking several bowls of the broth. I also really loved the beef tartare. And this was the first place where I tried black sesame ice cream; the flavor is unique and grows on you with every bite. Matcha ice cream is my personal favourite though, and I still prefer that one.

A truly lovely spot—highly recommend!

We were six people traveling in Tasmania, Hobart was the last stop before flying to Adelaide. It was valentine’s day and we were lucky to get a reservation ahead of time. Boy, are we so glad that we chose this restaurant. The lobster sashimi was the best. I also enjoyed wagyu, salmon and a wide variety of sushi. Overall, it is a great dinning place with good service. BTW, it has cute t-shirts on sale too. We picked up 6 and used as our group uniform, haha…

We had New Year Day’s lunch at this cozy Japanese restaurant in Central Hobart recently. We ordered their Aburi Seafood Don Set (kind of poke rice bowl with half torched / raw salmon, king fish, and avocado cuts) and Gyutan Don Set (grilled ox-tongue) that came with miso soup, rice, and some side dishes. I also got a nice drink of iced yuzu soda. The dishes were well prepared. I think they were the most authentic and tasty Japanese dishes we had during our recent Hobart holiday (out of 3 Japanese restaurants we visited).

Customer services are average, while the place’s ambience is good for a cozy and quiet dining experience. Prices on the menu are reasonable considering dishes’ quality and good, central location of the restaurant. You can pay with all type of credit cards with additional payment surcharge of up to 1.5%. They also charged additional Public Holiday surcharge of 10%.
