Edit – Second Visit:
However, during my second visit, the experience was disappointing. My husband and I were seated indoors, but we were bitten badly by mosquitoes, which forced us to change our table. To make things worse, one of the waiters kept giving us unfriendly looks throughout. Additionally, one of the glasses had a strong, unpleasant odor. almost like that of a wet dog. My legs are rashed up. Uploading pictures of inflammation caused due to bites.
Atmosphere is great, food is amazing. So why 3 star you may ask?
Because of service!
You walk in they seat you, the waiter disappears for solid 30 minutes. someone brings bread to your table but not the olive oil and balsamic. I had to get up and get it from one of the tables at a fine dining restaurant because the bread would get cold by the time someone checked on us.
The waiter finally comes after exactly 30 minutes, gets the order and disappears again. Maybe someone asked us if we need anything once during the whole night.
If this was a long weekend, or even a weekend I get it. It was Wednesday evening, the restaurant is busy, which means they are doing something right, but 3-4 waiters are trying to serve 25-30 tables, and they are not that well trained or hard working. They take their sweet time. Management should think of hiring more better trained servers, because the restaurant is good, but can’t imagine coming here on a weekend.
We ordered two dishes. The Caesar salad had a very small portion size, and the croutons were poor quality—very dry and not fresh. Even the cutlery felt cheap, as everything was plastic, which was surprising and unpleasant.
For the main course, we ordered the braised short rib, which was extremely underwhelming. It tasted like basic homemade food with nothing special or memorable about it, especially considering the price and expectations.
To make things worse, I ordered a glass of red wine, but it tasted like it had no alcohol at all, as if the alcohol had evaporated or the wine was old.
Overall, this was a very bad experience, and I would not recommend this restaurant. It did not meet even basic standards in terms of food quality, service, or overall dining experience.
There’s plenty of parking at the Calabasas Commons. At the restaurant offers sitting inside as well as heated patio outside.
Toscanova is highly recommended for both lunch and dinner.
So when we walked in we had reservations for an entire birthday. But the front seemed so confused as to where our table was how many people would be with us etc.
Eventually they figured it out after about 10-15 minutes ( Already a long time ) pretty annoying.
Once we sat down we waited again for quite some time for service. The good part was is that it took so long. We all had figured out what we wanted to order already.
The server was actually what made this dining experience a good one. Without him there wouldn’t of been as much comedy and happiness as there was at our table. He did an amazing job! I will definitely update this review once I figure out who our server was so everyone knows who to pick haha.
We ordered quite a few things. However I will only write about the dish I chose and how it was.
TAGLIATELLE ALLA BOLOGNESE
Pasta was slightly overcooked…. But the bolognese sauce was on point.
Usually you get a bolognese with to much or to little meat. This was just right.
More on the sweeter side then bitter/acidic side. Had a good proper taste.
So why the 3 stars?
Well simple. Service from the start wasn’t acceptable in a place like this.
Front staff needs to have better communication.
The food took about 40 minutes to come out. Seems a bit to long.
And well… the food is just ok. I wouldn’t come back here for the bolognese that’s for sure. It’s just pretty regular but not bad either. If I do end up coming back here it wont be from my choosing and I’ll try something different on the menu for another updated review.
