We sat outside and had a great time! Food was amazing and our waiter was attentive and gave us great service. Unfortunately we could not use the gift card we brought because apparently this restaurant is not tied to the other Salvatore Scallopini, but I guess thats okay.

The first time we went, we had a lovely meal and great service. The second time we went, it was so bad that we left feeling like we’d probably never go back. When we were ordering our food, I asked the waitress for her opinion on the bolognese. She said it is one of her favorite dishes and very popular. I ordered that. When it came out, the sauce was so watery, like as if it was just the juice from a can of tomatoes, no meat visible at all, and not thick like bolognese traditionally is. I honestly thought she brought me the wrong dish, like marinara or something. When she came back to our table, I asked if there was a mixup. She picked up my plate and put her face right in the pasta to look up close at the sauce and she was like “oh yes I can see there is some meat this is the bolognese.” I didn’t want to make a fuss so I just let it be. When she returned to our table later, she said “Many other diners have also questioned the sauce today.” As if that was supposed to help the situation? My husband ordered spaghetti and meatballs and he got 1 single meatball, lol. It was just a let down.

My friends and I met here to celebrate a few birthdays. Our server Megan was extremely friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. The food was outstanding and it’s always a pleasure when great service is paired with great food. Definitely a place where you want to course your meal and save room for desert. It was an exceptional experience that didn’t break the bank. Our group didn’t buy any alcoholic drinks but we did have some coffee drinks and the menu prices were still approachable.

I would just like to start off by saying our server, Carter, was so charming and caring! He is fantastic at his job and sure knows how to elevate service! So much attention to detail and making sure my group was comfortable throughout our stay. The chicken alfredo is okay but nothing that stands out from another Italian restaurant. Although two of my group members loved the octopus! They couldn’t stop talking about how good the sauce was and ordered bread specifically to keep trying it. The environment was amazingly dark but still lit! Took my group of four 20 minutes to be sat on a Friday night.

I never wrote a restaurant review, this is the first one, as the experience was extremely bad. Diners be aware, you could not complain about the food, as the manager would come to you with an intimidating tone, claiming “ what is wrong with the food, I think the food is prepared perfectly by our chef!” I mean, seriously? What a low/no standard the restaurant has when it comes to “ perfect!” Did you try the dish I ordered? How could you say that!
I ordered the seafood trio, however the food came sloppy looking, like someone randomly threw leftovers in the bowl. I instantly lost appetite by merely looking at the dish. The dish also was supposed to come with 3 jumbo scallops, however only two scallops were in it. Regardless of all the facts, the manager insisted the food was “perfect”, telling us “if you don’t like the food, you can order another dish, but you have to pay both, no return accepted”. So rude, me and my friends were shocked with the manager’s attitude and tone. The restaurant ended up just throw one missing scallop into the bowl, and kinda forced us to accept the dish.
Maybe this restaurant had too many complaints, so it hired the manager to handle its customers this way? Not sure.
One more thing, every entry on the menu is a la cart, even for pasta, you don’t get a pasta dish with pasta unless you pay extra for pasta, so weird.
Downtown Birmingham has many food choices, avoid this one.

This was one of the best mushroom stews I’ve ever had with rice, mushrooms are usually a difficult ingredient to cook. But the chef here manages to cook the flavors super fresh. Absolutely great service, absolutely great food.

Went on a friday night was super busy. Waited about 30 minutes to be seated. Atmosphere is dark in the main dining room. Ordered a chicken marsala and it was just average. Came with a side pasta. Tomato basil soup had flavor and was good. Service was a little lack luster but it was busy so I don’t hold it against them. Would I return probably not

Went here with Diana and had a good meal but I wasn’t wowed by it didn’t feel worth the full bill. The drinks were fantastic. Highly recommend their spritzers. The salad however I wish was a little fresher it was a little whittled. I also would recommend to make sure they put the dressing on the side it was a little to much when they tossed it. The calamari was good but it was about average. As far as the main dishes good they were just meat no vegetables so if you were going to want them make sure you choose a side for the table to share. I had Pesce con limone wasn’t over breaded but the lemon caper sauce was way to much it over smothered the fish and had a little too much salt. Diana had the Tosca as chicken goes it was okay again to heavy on the sauce also the chicken was huge would have liked to see a smaller piece and made some vegetables to go with it. In all I would give the meal a B and it’s a good back up option but with all the other excellent options in Birmingham it wouldn’t be first choice.

Have loved Sal’s for years and years for special occasions or weeknight and weekend dinner. Such quality food and wonderful staff. So glad they are open again for lunch.

I’ve tried giving this location a chance 3x and every time I am so disappointed. Look at the pics of my carry out to see how absolutely skimpy this place is on their sauce and portion size. We ordered gnocchi with bolognese sauce, but most of the gnocchi is bare. We ordered garlic bread to dip in the sauce, but there was no sauce. This location doesn’t even give you bread with dinner. They charge you for it. My chicken tosca was ok, but they don’t even put the effort to cut up the mushrooms. Madison heights location is WAY BETTER than BIRMINGHAM which is super sad. This place has no business calling it Italian food. Shame on you!
