If it weren’t for our anniversary, I’d probably never have discovered this hidden Japanese gem. The cozy minimalist space hides an incredible dining experience! We chose the $88pp Chef’s Feasting Set with two glasses of sake and enjoyed a “blind box” style dinner where every dish was a surprise. From the oyster with ginger vinegar jelly to the crispy sushi rice with fish trio, everything was beautifully crafted and full of flavor. The sashimi and sushi platters were super fresh, and the grilled toothfish was perfectly crispy and tender. Even the cauliflower tempura was amazing! We ended with a Genmaicha cheesecake and fruity sake — absolutely perfect. A warm, intimate spot ideal for dates or casual gatherings. Make sure to book ahead; dinner is only on Thu–Sat nights!

Went to Sushi On for dinner and started with the edamame and assorted sashimi, followed by beef udon and wagyu scotch fillet for mains, plus cauliflower tempura on the side. The beef udon had a flavourful broth and nicely firm noodles, while the wagyu scotch fillet was tender and beautifully marbled. The assorted sashimi was fresh with a great variety, but the cauliflower tempura ended up being my favourite- perfectly seasoned and crispy. Finished with the cheesecake dessert, which was more of a mousse-style modern cake with a hint of tang and subtle tea flavour; tasty, but easily the tiniest “cheesecake” I’d ever had. Great service and a serene, modern atmosphere overall.

Modern Japanese restaurant serving Hakozushi, a rectangular shaped nigiri sushi.

The dinner menu is concise, featuring a curated selection of tapas (Hakozuzhi, sashimi) and mains (noodles, fish and wagyu). According to Google, Hakozushi originated from Osaka in the 19th century. It is made using a wooden box (oshibako) to compress the rice into a rectangle shape and topped with various ingredients. Here at Sushi On, there are four toppings available; we chose three – Salmon (10), Kingfish ($11), Avocado ($7). The rice, seasoned lightly, is firmly compressed. I find the combination on the whole to taste natural (e.g. rice and avocado, rice and fish). A variation of Hakozushi is where the rice is fried until crips and topped with various diced raw fish (tuna, salmon, kingfish $15).

Beef Udon ($23) is a hearty bowl of plump udon in a rich, sweet broth. Cauliflower tempura ($12) is lightly battered, soft with crunch from the rice pops and seasoned with lots of mayo.

Service is friendly.

Nice sushi and the crispy cauliflower is delicious.

The crispy rice sushi is a bit sticky and hard to chew. Using normal rice will be better in my opinion.

Overall, the place is good.

A hidden gem in the middle of Melbourne’s city bustle — Sushi on Little Bourke feels like one of those places you stumble upon once, and quietly keep coming back to.

The sushi here is fresh, clean, and unfussy in the best way. No over-the-top sauces or gimmicks — just quality ingredients prepared with skill. I tried the nigiri, which was incredibly soft and flavorful, and I love the tooth fish the most ! So yummy !

There’s a quiet charm to the space — a small, cozy dining area. It’s not a place that shouts, but rather one that invites.

Perfect for a quick solo meal or a no-fuss dinner with someone who appreciates good sushi. Affordable, consistent, and quietly excellent.

Absolutely fantastic sushi experience!
I visited this place for an important work meeting with high expectations, and it definitely didn’t disappoint. The fish was incredibly fresh, and every piece was beautifully prepared with great attention to detail. The atmosphere was cozy yet elegant, and the staff were welcoming and attentive without being intrusive.

Staffs were welcoming and friendly, and explained through the menu thoroughly.

We had chefs recommedation 7 meal course and every piece was fantastic- especially loved the crispy rice hako sushi and yuzu/genmaicha cheese cake.

Definitely coming back!

Friday night @6pm. We didn’t have a booking but there was a table for us. There was only a table of 2 when we arrived. When we left, the place was nearly full.

The service was great, he was really attentive, but not over the top, so it made you feel comfortable.

The vibe was modern, minimalist, open, spacious and bright. When we walked out into the cool fresh air, it was as if we were in Japan in winter. Loved our experience!

The food was so fresh and delicious.
We ordered:
1x Assorted sashimi
2x Assorted Hako sushi
1x Crispy sushi rice with fish trio
1x Karaage chicken ribs
1x Cauliflower Tempura
1x Monkfish and Chips

5 recommendation from me.

I’d love to go again during lunchtime to try their “Japan Brioche Sando” in all their flavours (pork, chicken, prawn and fish) and their spanner crab yaki udon
Can’t wait to return!

Really great atmosphere with a welcoming vibe. The seating area is spacious and comfortable, and the table lighting adds a beautiful touch to the overall ambiance. It was also pleasantly quiet with no crowds, which made the experience even more enjoyable.

When it comes to the sushi, the tuna, kingfish, and paradise prawns were excellent, fresh and full of flavour. The assorted sashimi was decent, but considering the price, it felt a bit average.

However, I wouldn’t recommend the chicken ribs. At $18 for just two pieces, the portion size doesn’t justify the price. The taste was actually very good, especially with the dipping sauce, but $9 per wing doesn’t feel reasonable. Hopefully, the restaurant will reconsider this.

Overall, a lovely spot with quality dishes, a relaxing vibe, and no crowds, but with a few pricing adjustments, it could be even better.

We had an amazing lunch here and highly recommend it! The Chicken Katsu Sando was crispy, juicy, and full of flavor, while the Japanese Fish and Chips were perfectly crispy and fresh—no fishy smell, just pure deliciousness. The vibe of the place was great too, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy some tasty food.
