Reviews
For a restaurant of its caliber, the location is convenient: it sits in an outdoor shopping center next to everyday staples (grocery, pharmacy, even a gas station), which means parking is effortless. It’s unconventional, but it genuinely serves the Los Osos Valley crowd and anyone who doesn’t want to default to downtown every weekend. Inside, the lighting is warm and ambient, the energy is lively without being too loud, and the layout works equally well for date night or a family dinner. We grabbed patio seating, and it was great.
As someone who’s both Peruvian and Italian, I was curious how their bachiche approach would land, and it landed. We started with the crudo ceviche special, which was a 10/10 balance of fresh, bright acidity while still feeling satisfying. The croquetas (fried causa balls filled with king crab, served with ají amarillo sauce) were also a clean 10/10, and complemented our ceviche (and probably most of the other crudos on the menu) really well. For entrees, we ordered the Porto (black squid ink arborio rice with white wine, aromatics, and a full lineup of seafood) and the Tortelli di Zucca (homemade butternut squash pasta in mascarpone, topped with beef short rib asado). Both were genuinely 10/10. Not pictured, but the Maracuya Sour was also a 10/10.
Overall, Nicola feels like an excellent addition to SLO: elevated food without the downtown hassle, and an experience that feels right. Mistura and Nicola are 1A and 1B for me!
The interior of this place is stunning, and the whole atmosphere feels special. Highly recommend to everyone visiting SLO. I’ll definitely come back here next time I’m in town!
My only gripe – the caprese salad had tomatoes that were not good at all. I get that it’s out of season, but if that’s the case, it should not be on the menu. Highly expensive for a sub-par dish.
Definitely get some pasta here – it’s hand made in-house and super good. Overall, a fantastic addition to the slo culinary canon.
I highly recommend this place for food and the first class Service (Rory, Mr. Christian, and Damion)❗
Nicola is a one of a kind restaurant for SLO and definitely a top experience!
