Some of the brisket were moist and flavorful. We really enjoyed the Brussels sprouts! Great atmosphere and vibes, especially the arcade area for the kids and bar for adults. Service was lacking, primarily because the server was young but he made up with his enthusiasm and energy.
Warning though, if you get the salmon steak it does have quite a bit of bone in it so be careful, but it tasted amazing.
I ordered a 2-meat BBQ Combo. 1/2 Chicken and Ribs (4) with a side of French Fried potatoes. The Fries came out after 15 minutes or so, by themselves. I thought the main entree they were a side of would come soon…..but that didn’t happen. I stopped eating them after 10 mins and covered them with my napkin to try and keep them warm. Another 15 mins from there and still no main entree. The customer to my left had to ask where his take out order was as he had been waiting over a beer- long ago finished. I caught the bartender’s eye when he came back from the kitchen to for that patron’s food. I asked where my food is….he went to check…I asked if I could have a new order of warm fries to replace the cold ones and then a runner finally delivered my BBQ plate. This also happened 2/3 months ago ( much worse on that visit ). I’m sorry but I just have no desire to spend $50-$60 again for disappointment. Plus….sadly the ribs were tough- you really have to bite into them to get the meat to pull off the bones. The chicken isn’t large enough to have enough meat in the leg or thigh to enjoy. Even one of the associates said that the slow food out of the kitxhen is a very common happening here. Bear’s in New Haven is great. One of the associates here said there is a good place in Fairfield.
I was greeted warmly when I arrived. I went at mid afternoon when it wouldn’t be too busy and decided to sit at the bar. One thing I noticed right off was how clean the place was. Clearly effort was put into ensuring a clean restaurant and I appreciate that.
When I sat at the bar there were a couple of other people at the bar. I was waited on promptly with a menu. I ordered a beer which was served quickly along with a glass of water that I didn’t need to ask for (other restaurants take notice please).
The bartender was attentive but not overbearing nor hard to find. My intent in ordering was to explore some basic BBQ staples to get a sense of the food quality. I started with corn bread – which was served in three generous portions with a hot honey jelly. I would have like the hot honey to be hotter, kind of like MIke’s Hot Honey. The corn bread was a nice balance of not too sweet and not too dry, leaning toward the sweet side.
For the mains I ordered the brisket and pork ribs. These came with Texas Toast (definitely a Texas BBQ thing having lived in Dallas) and slaw. I also order a side of Broccoli Salad.
The corn bread was served quickly, as expected and the main course about a beer later. The presentation was traditional BBQ restaurant. The portions were modest (fine with me) compared to most BBQ places I go to.
The Broccoli Salad was an unexpected surprise! I love it. Also the slaw was an excellent compromise between a dry slaw and an overly mayo focused which was fresh and very tasty.
The meat, specifically the brisket was a big let down. More about that in a bit. The ribs were done well but like other chain BBQ places I think there is too much focus on ribs that “fall off the bone” which is in fact not great. Normally that means they’ve been over cooked. My ribs were on the border of that. The brisket was another story and a big disappointment. It was so overcooked or reheated that its consistency was like mush. Not very enjoyable.
Knowing this is a chain restaurant my confidence is low that the quality of the BBQ will change so do with that as you will. Regarding service and atmosphere it was wonderful. I’ll go back to explore more of the menu but the traditional BBQ meat will not be part of that.
