Mountain Lakes Bagel in Mountain Lakes, NJ has been in business since 1996 with original owners (and Mountain Lakes residents), with Bob and Dawn. Bob has been in the pizza and bagel business for the last 40 years. Dawn also worked in a bagel store growing up in Queens as a teenager. These owners have some serious bagel skills! We only use the highest quality ingredients. Bob says If I won’t eat it I won’t sell it!. I was honestly surprised by the number of high reviews, which is what initially convinced me to try this place. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt uncomfortable. There were three employees behind the counter who just stared at us without saying a word. Even after we said hello (because it felt so awkward), no one responded. Almost everything had prices listed except the bagel menu, and those two things alone made me consider leaving. Still, I figured the food must be good given the reviews.
One employee was friendly enough to take our order, but after entering it into the register, she didn’t mention that we were supposed to wait for our food before paying. After handing us the food, she then asked if we had paid yet. Meanwhile, another employee stood at the register staring silently, waiting for the next customer behind us, which made the whole situation very confusing.
We ordered a salt bagel with vegetable cream cheese and a jalapeño bagel with lox spread. The bagels were mostly soft, but I wouldn’t say they tasted very fresh. The jalapeño bagel did have a nice kick. The vegetable cream cheese was decent but also didn’t taste particularly fresh, and the lox spread was very fishy and overwhelming. For the price, the amount of cream cheese was disappointing, especially compared to other bagel places that offer much more for the same cost.
Overall, I’d choose another place for bagels unless you’re a regular local, as the staff seemed much friendlier with someone they already knew.

Best bagels in the area at a great price. Lots of unique flavor options that other shops don’t always carry like black russian and jalapeño. It’s a family run business of course, and the bagels are made fresh every day.

Although I’m not from there, every time we visited family in the neighborhood, we have to stop for a bagel sandwich and some coffee. We feel like unacomplished without a visit. Living in Colorado will never replicate the tasty bagels, the efficient service and just the old-family small business vibes it gives. Always a favorite.

Bagels are top notch here, and it’s one of the better spots locally with pricing that matches the board every time. The Whole Wheat Everythings are always fresh and toast up beautifully. Snagged a tuna salad on one today and they definitely gave me my money’s worth.

We stopped in to grab bagels for our family and the food itself was good. There was a small mix up with an order that was requested toasted but came out untoasted. My sister politely mentioned it, and the sandwich was remade.
Unfortunately, the interaction afterward felt unnecessarily tense. Being told “next time make sure you say it’s toasted” after she had already done so, came off as dismissive rather than customer-focused.
Mistakes happen.. that’s understandable but tone matters, especially in service. A little warmth and accountability would go a long way. I hope this is taken as constructive feedback, because the food is solid.

Ordered bagels the day before I needed them. When I picked them up and brought them home, they weren’t fresh. I’ve eaten here before and the bagels were great. That’s why I went back. Very disappointed.

Amazing food at good prices. No nonsense ordering. I ordered bagels to go for traveling with intent to freeze them and the workers gave me a freezer bag and some tips to properly freeze for best quality. I have since thawed them out and started eating them and they’re still fantastic! This is a picture of Taylor Ham, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel; the other picture is part of the sandwich along with a bite of blueberry bagel with cream cheese (they put a ton on and it’s delicious)!

Parking lot is small and usually busy in the morning. They have a good selection of beverages and bagels. Taylor ham, egg and cheese on a bagel was fresh, moist and delicious. Bacon, egg and cheese was pretty good too but bacon could have been slightly crispier. Ordering and paying don’t happen at the same time. Can be confusing when you first come here. Would come back!
