They are still working out the kinks when it comes to service since it was their soft open, it took us a while to get a drink but someone recognized right away we were waiting and got it for us.
This place is a gem and well-worth visiting, they have something special going on here!
We were greeted at the door by the artist himself, Chef Raymond.
As a self-proclaimed omakase addict, I felt it was only right to initiate my sister into the fold right then and there. Every course was a testament to freshness and craftsmanship, elevated by the chef’s captivating conversation. We learned so much. If you find yourself adrift in the Pearl District, do yourself a favor and let Chef Raymond rescue your evening. I’ll be back as soon as I can!
About 15–20 minutes before our reservation, the restaurant called to ask if we were okay with switching seats — we agreed, thinking it was a minor change. But when we arrived, it became clear the reason was that they had influencers coming in to advertise the place and prioritized them over us. ( turn out all the uni went to supply them!) That already felt a bit off, but we tried to stay positive.
We ordered the Omakase B16 course specifically because I was looking forward to uni. However, without informing us beforehand, they substituted it with snow crab. It wasn’t until we asked “what about the uni?” that they told us it had been swapped. No heads-up, no apology — just an assumption we’d be fine with the change.
At the start of the meal, the staff mistakenly thought my boyfriend and I were sharing one omakase set. Only one portion came out, and both of us were confused. Thankfully, the waitress helped us place another order — again, not ideal, but we tried to be understanding.
Then, midway through the meal, they forgot to serve one portion of our courses. We waited 20 minutes before they realized. The staff offered us complimentary miso soup… but honestly, I didn’t come here for miso soup. The missing course never came, and instead, they brought out a $55 appetizer (they claimed) as a replacement — which felt random and not aligned with the rest of the experience.
To top it all off, the table was never set up properly — no condiment container or basic setup you’d expect at a place serving a multi-course meal. In the end, the waitress apologized and got us a 5% discount after talking to the manager, but it really didn’t feel like enough given how many things went wrong.
Disorganized service, poor communication, and an overall chaotic experience.
The omakase tasting menu was hands down the best sushi I’ve had. 10/10. Will be telling other about this place and I’ll be back.
Appetizers were succulent.
Nigiri was buttery/soft/hearty
Every dish was prepared with care.
When we arrived, we were shown two tables next to each other and given the option to choose, which was nice. We selected the table for two and began looking through the menu. However, when we asked our waiter multiple times for recommendations, we received very little input, which was disappointing—especially for a sushi restaurant where guidance can really enhance the experience.
Throughout the meal, my water was never refilled, and I had to ask several times for my drink to be refilled. At the same time, our waiter attempted to bring the check multiple times, even though we weren’t finished. There was a Seahawks game on, and it appeared that people seated behind us—presumably his friends—were getting most of his attention.
At one point, we asked about the gold flakes we had seen featured in one of the videos that drew us in. Instead of explaining the option or how to order it, the waiter simply pointed to another couple at the bar and said that was an experience they do over there.
The food itself was delicious and lived up to the hype, but unfortunately the service took away from what could have been a great night. With more attentive and informative service, this place could truly shine.
Chef Raymond was incredibly knowledgeable and made the experience even more special. He took the time to explain each course and created a welcoming, engaging atmosphere throughout the meal.
The Lychee Martini was a standout. Crisp, lightly floral, and perfectly balanced, it paired effortlessly with the omakase. Elevated yet approachable, Ginza is ideal for a special night out or an intimate dinner. Easily one of my favorite dining experiences in Portland.
One suggestion for improvement would be to add brief descriptions for some menu items, as we found ourselves needing to Google a few unfamiliar dishes.
