Paying homage to Chinatown with the classics! Enjoy Chinese food life! #getriceboxedThe Rice Box is Modern American Chinese Cuisine. Originating in Houston in 2011 The Rice Box planted its roots on a corner in The Montrose district where it has had the privilege of serving reinvented Chinese classics weekly ever since. While opening the second truck in 2013 to operate at a local University of Houston, there was a reawakening of Chinese food happening; it was the right time to open our first permanent location and bring everyone delicious, elevated American Chinese take-out classics like General Tso, Sesame, Sweet Sour and Kung Pao Chicken our way, ALL the time, in any weather, every day!

The Rice Box is always such a good experience every time we go. The vibe is super unique with that modern, neon-lit Hong Kong street feel, it’s definitely a spot that stands out in Houston.

We ordered a mix of items and everything came out fresh and full of flavor. The wings were crispy with just the right amount of spice and crunch and the fried rice was packed with flavor without being too heavy. The General TSO chicken is my all time fav. It was saucy, tender and honestly one of the better versions I’ve had.

Service was quick and the whole place has a cool, casual atmosphere that’s great for a laid back lunch or dinner. Perfect take out as well.

Definitely a go-to when you’re craving Chinese comfort food with a fun twist.

Our first time here and we were very impressed! Atmosphere was cool with the neon all around and service was phenomenal. Parking was a bit tricky but we went around the corner and parked in the parking garage for the free 2 hour. Food was really good. We had the sweet & sour chicken (medium heat) with fried rice and egg roll and veggie fried rice (no spice) and egg roll. The absolute best egg roll I have ever had! S&S chicken was amazing and medium heat was perfect for the Cajun pallet.

The Rice Box restaurant is such a cool spot, featuring deemed lighting, arcade inspired aesthetics, a huge digital display of their food/drink menu and other awesome features.

The atmosphere was very inviting, so were the staff—the food was great and I look forward to returning ꨄ

Seen this place on Instagram and didn’t disappoint! Loved the vibe, the food and the service was pretty good as well.

Had multiple options for meat lovers & vegetarians as well. Loved the futuristic neon look to this place, even played 80s retro movies at the bar!

A very cool and bright futuristic almost cyberpunk themed chinese food restaurant, awesome for pictures and a good experience. Despite the gimmick, the food is AMAZING, usually gimmicky places like this the food is mediocre it’s more of a experience than a common food restaurant, but that’s not the case here at all, the food is delicious and worth the price, most dishes come with a veggie spring roll or chicken egg roll, and options of rice or noodles. Definitely worth a visit.

Great tasting food with lots of options! The atmosphere is out of this world with the futuristic look and vibe! Lots of food for the value, and they even have sparkling water on a self-service tap! Service is quick and very accommodating! As of writing this, this is my second time eating here today because I keep wanting to come back! I highly recommend The Rice Box!

I’ve only had the Chongqing Chicken (basically a spicy fried chicken served on top of white rice) and the house fried rice, extra spicy and normal (basically egg fried rice with protein of your choosing) and by god, for the price they ask, they were both phenomenal! I’ve had better Sichuan/Chongqing/Spicy-Asian-Popcorn-chicken adjacent dishes before, but the only fried Rice I’ve had better than from “The Rice Box” is stuff I have cooked myself. I don’t know what sort of umami divinity they put in there, but I eat literally just one small box of house fried rice as an entire meal, and I’m a college student! The vibe is also immaculate, the song choices great, and the staff friendly!

4.5 Stars – A Futuristic Dining Experience (Best at Night!)

If you’re looking for a place that feels more like a scene than just dinner—Rice Box is it. We visited at night and the whole vibe was absolutely electric. It felt like stepping into a video game or a high-energy movie scene, with vibrant neon lighting, bold design, and that sleek cyberpunk kind of edge. The aesthetic alone is worth the trip, but heads up—it’s a lot. If you’re someone who’s sensitive to bright or flashing lights, has sensory sensitivities, or gets migraines easily, this might not be your spot. Otherwise, it’s a total visual treat.

The inside was clean and fun, with decent customer service and a family-friendly vibe. The bathrooms, however, weren’t the cleanest, so that was a bit of a letdown. Still, I’d say the overall environment makes up for it, especially if you’re sitting outdoors in the shared patio area—it’s beautiful out there at night, and there are plenty of other great restaurants nearby too. We were actually meeting friends from different places and all grabbed food from our favorite spots, then met up in the middle. Such a great setup!

As for the food—I didn’t love the orange chicken. It wasn’t bad, just not a standout. But the rice was phenomenal. I also got the cream cheese rangoons and egg rolls, and they were definitely the highlight of the meal. There was this one dipping sauce that was so good, I used it on everything—rice, rolls, you name it. That sauce made the whole meal for me.

I didn’t get a drink because we were restaurant-hopping that night, but for just one meal, I spent around $25, which I thought was totally fair for the portion and quality. The area itself felt very safe, even at night—people walking around, eating outside, dogs lounging near tables… it was a great atmosphere. Just a note: most places around there do charge for parking, so be ready for that.

Would I go back? Absolutely. I’m definitely going to recommend this place to friends, family, and even my business partners visiting the city as a really cool nighttime spot. It’s an experience more than just a meal—and I can’t wait for others to enjoy it like we did.
