For Christmas Eve, my wife, eight-year-old daughter, and I made a reservation at this small sushi spot along Barracks Row. After many accolades and Michelin nods, it was an honor to dine at Sushi Hachi. Here’s our experience.
1) Food: To start, we ordered the miso soup and edamame. Both were full of flavor and well prepared, especially the edamame. Sometimes the ones from the grocery store can be slimy. These are not. They are perfect.
To eat, I got the shrimp tempura, Chicken Kara-age, and the 8th Street sushi. My wife ordered the Chef’s Sushi Platter and swore she will crave the Yellowtail Cilantro Roll. Our daughter enjoyed the California Roll.
2) Drinks: Their cocktails hit each end of the liquor spectrum. My wife enjoyed their Manhattan. The Summer cocktail was a tad sweet, which I found refreshing and unique.
3) Service: It’s excellent. The timing, warmth, and attention to our daughter was spot on.
4) Space: It’s simple yet inviting inside one long dining room with the sushi counter in the way back.
5) Area: Along Barracks Row, Sushi Hachi is near many other restaurants and local shops. One of the oldest military bases in the country is across the street. There’s street parking- paid and free- throughout the neighborhood.

Service was good and staff were friendly. The food took a bit longer to come out, so I recommend ordering everything at once. Sushi was okay overall, nothing exceptional but enjoyable. The restaurant is easy to find and prices are reasonable for what you get.

I mourn this place and food every day, I went yesterday while being in dc for one day and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. This tiny place that had nobody, was the best food I have ever had. This food, sushi, nigiri is incomparable. I got 2 8th street rolls and that is the best roll I have ever had. The salmon and tuna nigiri are unexplainable. This is such a delicacy for SUCH A GOOD PRICE. I can’t explain how much I love this place. Service is also amazing! Brought us a crème brûlée on the house which is insane. The food came quick and they were super kind. I would make this my death row meal.

Sushi Hachi is the best sushi restaurant I have ever been to; it was so good that my boyfriend and I went back two nights in a row. Their cocktails are great, and my personal favourite was the 8th street specialty sushi. The atmosphere and mood is calm and pleasant, and the staff and service is top notch. I have to mention our waitress too from the second time, Soko. She remembered us from the previous night, she even remembered which drink she had made me! And she took the time to make some recommendations for us, and brought us some miso on the house and was just the most pleasant and friendly waitress I have had in a while. Thank you!!! We will definitely be back again for as long as we are in/near DC.

Sushi Hachi has a nice ambiance, but the experience was a bit underwhelming. The sushi was decent—fresh, but not extraordinary. While the food was enjoyable, it didn’t quite live up to the hype.
The service, unfortunately, left something to be desired. It felt a bit slow and inattentive, which detracted from the overall experience.
If you’re nearby and looking for decent sushi, it’s worth a visit, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.

My wife and I went here for Valentine’s Day and had a great time. Service was friendly and attentive, appetizers were hearty and the rolls were delicious. We also go cocktails and dessert all at a respectable price point. We definitely plan to return!

3.5 Good food, not great. This is a personal rating, just because I’ve had way better. Service was 5 stars. Small spot with great vibes. Very good prices.
I ordered to go. The to go wasabi is in a packet (e.g. like ketchup or soy sauce). That was poor for me and it didn’t taste natural. I had the fried rice and it was heavily flavored with egg. That threw my tongue off, but someone else may like it. The sushi gets a pass. Good, but not great. Great eel sauce.

What a neighborhood gem on Barracks Row – enjoyed a chirashi bowl as part of a lunch combo with phenomenal sashimi. Service was lovely, and I cannot wait to come back. Would and will highly recommend to anyone seeking quality (and affordable!) sushi – thank you!
