The rule of denying people water is a pretty despicable business strategy.

I work in this mall, and during my break today, I stopped by to ask for a cup of ice for my water bottle. Our break room has filtered water, but unfortunately, no ice machine or freezer. I was told that from now on, I’ll need to make a purchase just to receive a cup of ice or water.

This was especially disappointing to hear, as I used to be a store manager at Starbucks. Unless something has drastically changed, this goes against what I know to be core to Starbucks’ customer service values. Providing water or ice — especially to someone working in the same mall — has always been a simple courtesy, not a transaction.

I’ve never encountered a food and beverage company that refuses such a basic request. It’s not just inconvenient — it feels needlessly petty and contrary to the kind of hospitality Starbucks is known for.

It’s unfortunate, but when I do want to make a coffee purchase I’ll go to Gloria Jean’s upstairs instead. Even though this Starbucks is less than 100 feet from my store. They’ve always been kind and accommodating, and they’ll be the ones earning my business from now on.

It’s your typical Starbucks but in a mall kiosk format. The servers were polite and quick. My latte was a little bitter suggesting the barista didn’t pull it properly, but this is a minor niggle.

This location has the best service and the best baristas ever. They always have their drinks done promptly. They know me by name and greet me every-time. Even when I go there 6times in one day. Josie and Heather are awesome.

Abby was amazing today 9/9/23. She has excellent customer service skills, very knowledgeable about the drinks, and helpful to not only me but the other customers in line. She worked hard and efficiently to keep everyone happy while the rest of the team was doing their best to keep up with the orders but you do gotta have fun at work sometimes so I don’t blame them!! Keep up the great work everyone you make a great environment here at south hills village.

The customer service is generally pretty good which is why I’m giving this location 2 stars, however my recent experience is inspiring me to average previous experiences with the -10 experience I just had. Not only did the barista berate me (for reasons known only to him) but then proceeded to talk about me with the cashier while I and my children were within earshot. Abominable customer service and unprofessional behavior. Get your coffee fix before going to the mall. Or better yet, go visit Gloria Jean’s upstairs. That’s what I’ll be doing in the future.
