Goodbye to Cholada Thai, a Beachside Beacon Lost in the Pacific …

Still, I can’t pretend I wasn’t shocked to see Cholada—a restaurant that first opened in 2000—burn to the ground. The feeling of powerlessness …

What is not to love? It’s a dive, so don’t come expecting a luxury 5-star experience in the traditional sense. But it is absolutely a 5 star in food, value, and authentic hospitality. The food was absolutely delicious, service was fast and the location is to die for. We had the garlic wings and the shrimp Thai rice, but I wanted to order literally everything on the menu. We were out of there in under an hour and for a decent price. We eat Thai a LOT so it felt like a homey comfort to find this gem amongst the powerhouse restaurants of Malibu. Highly recommend!

Phenomenal! Still dreaming about the Khao Soi (noodle curry). Probably the best Thai curry I’ve ever had. It packed so much flavor and depth. The cut of beef could be better quality, but it’s a real stand out curry dish that I highly recommend.

Pad See Ew also very good. Portions are generous. Service is very warm and friendly. The place looks like a shack on the side of the road, but it’s definitely worth a visit.

I recommend dining in versus take out to really enjoy everything hot and fresh.

It’s a damn good DIVE! 🙂 Good spot for fair priced food, good quality, and served fast.

I like this place, shanty shack vibe, hot, humid and all. The food is good, huge portions.

My reviews and the places I go to tend to steer towards value for what you’re paying. This place definitely gives you really good portion sizes, quality in their food, and a lot of value, that’s for sure. They don’t skimp.

What impressed me was the Pad Thai noodles. They were not too sweet, were served at a really decent temperature, and they pack it full of chicken. So it’s not just all noodle, no action. LOL. I guess because too many people were coming in here with allergies, they cut back on the peanuts. If you’d like them in the dish, you just have to specify that you want them. Same holds true for the scallions. Adding the peanuts in the scallions I think makes all the difference in the world, and brings that fresh grassy note to the dish. So if you’re not allergic, go ahead, and splurge on nuts and grass.

The Thai fried rice was good too. Huge portion size, and packed full of chicken as well. They don’t skimp on the proteins here as you can tell. The flavor is great. You can tell they use a little bit of broth to flavor their rice. It was tasty, and the rice has a nice chew texture in your mouth.

Just between these two dishes, I’d say you could feed minimum two people that were really big eaters, probably three if you all ate responsibly, maybe four if you ordered one more appetizer or a side dish or something.

The Thai iced tea is great, not overly sweet. It’s the typical Thai iced tea you would find in any other Thai establishment. Nothing special, but simple and to the point.

The only downside to this place when I visited on a “warm” 70F degree, October day was that the main dining area was a little hot and humid, even with the windows open, and a small air conditioner blasting. I think it’s because the sun is blasting this place at a 45° angle from morning through the late afternoon.

The outside of the building has seen better days, but for being about 300 ft from the water, it’s understandable that this place looks like a Beach Shack from the outside.

Over all though, this is one of the few places in the Malibu area, between Topanga and say Kanan that offers Asian themed food.
If fancy schmancy is your cup of tea, just take it to go. Lol. The food is still great either way.

If you’re staying at a bed and breakfast, out of town visitor, maybe you’re a roaming pack of wild motorcycle riders, or bicycle Enthusiast passing through the area, this might be a good spot for inexpensive, quality food, and a great price! Don’t expect anything in terms of the atmosphere, but if food is your only agenda, this place aims to please.

PS: YES, they have separate Men and Women bathrooms

We’ve never tried Tomkha with beef and it was a nice change and complimented the crab fried rice very well. The portions are very generous so we definitely recommend sharing our family style. The messy green curry was also delicious and unexpected it had noodles and green beans and more. It definitely felt messy but very delicious. We loved that this was an option along the beach.

Very expensive, however the portion size is huge. We ordered yellow curry, fried rice, orange chicken and Thai iced tea. Yellow curry and fried rice were okay, but the orange chicken was not at all crispy. Not worth the price! If they could come up with smaller portion size options, it would be much better.

Cholada Thai Beach Cuisine in Malibu is a hidden gem that offers an authentic taste of Thai cuisine. During my recent visit, I had the pleasure of trying a variety of dishes, including the chicken pad thai, Tom Yum Soup, Pineapple fried rice, and Basil Chicken wings. Here’s my review:

Chicken Pad Thai: The chicken pad thai at Cholada Thai Beach Cuisine was a delightful combination of flavors. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the sauce had a nice balance of sweet and savory. The addition of tender chicken pieces added to the overall taste, making it a satisfying and comforting dish.

Tom Yum Soup: The Tom Yum Soup was a highlight of my meal. It had a robust and tangy broth infused with the fragrant flavors of lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili. The combination of shrimp or chicken (depending on your choice) and fresh vegetables made it a refreshing and spicy appetizer.

Pineapple Fried Rice: The Pineapple Fried Rice was a delightful blend of sweet and savory. Served inside a hollowed-out pineapple, it was a visually pleasing dish. The rice was perfectly cooked and had a balanced mix of ingredients, including chunks of pineapple, vegetables, and your choice of protein

Basil Chicken Wings: The Basil Chicken Wings were a treat for the taste buds. They were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside

This Thai place has the best orange chicken. It’s not on the menu but ask for it and they’ll hook you up. All their regular Thai food is really good too. Get some curry and put it on rice then sprinkle the orange chicken on top and boom! Tastebuds and stomach will be happy.

Phenomenal food! I haven’t had a ton of Thai food in my life, but this was the best tasting Thai food I’ve had! The sauce was the thick, the rice cooked perfectly, the fish texture was great, and the flavor mindblowingly good.

The shack is quite nice and the service was great. Will definitely be coming back to try more things from their large menu!

Best spot on the Westside for Thai. No need to drive to east Hollywood Thai town for authentic Thai food from the Westside. The staff is incredible, and the place is amazing. Get the Thai Pumpkin curry with Sole, Chinese broccoli, Som Tum and the Thai green curry with tofu, packed with tons of flavor and umami.

I was very pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. I was on my way to the airport and look for a place to have a quick bite. It’s conveniently located with a good amount of parking. While the appearance is more like a shed at the beach, the food was excellent. Due to the Limited space you have a view of the kitchen where the staff was cleaning fresh veggies. The food was very well seasoned and tasted delicious. This place is truly a hidden gem along Hwy 1.
