La Posta’s authentic dishes are made from century-old recipes handed down to us from the Fountain, Chavez and Griggs families. Now one of the oldest and most recognized restaurants in the Southwest (opened in 1939), La Posta de Mesilla still offers its traditional hospitality, fine food and spirits to all who wander here.
New Mexican restaurant in an 18th century stagecoach station also features a piranha tank & aviary.

Reviews
The restaurant is beautiful, very clean, and the service was great. Honestly, this is the best Mexican food I’ve ever had. I live in California and eat at a lot of Mexican restaurants, but nothing compares to La Posta. It is a must-stop!
The food was excellent and fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared.
The restaurant has a unique Mexican charm, with colorful décor that makes the whole place feel warm and authentic.
It’s also perfectly located in the heart of Mesilla, making it a great stop while exploring the area.
The service was friendly and efficient, and the overall atmosphere was inviting.
Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the region!
I stopped in Mesilla, New Mexico while driving from Tucson to El Paso, and this little historic town immediately felt like stepping straight into the Old West. Mesilla is famous for its Billy the Kid history, adobe architecture, and beautiful central plaza — and right in the heart of it sits La Posta De Mesilla, one of the most unique restaurants I’ve ever visited on the road.
I found free street parking just a short walk from the main plaza and headed inside. The restaurant is designed in a traditional New Mexican style, with warm adobe walls, colorful décor, and several hidden rooms and hallways that almost feel like you’re exploring an old hacienda or a Western movie set. I grabbed a seat at the wooden bar in one of the side rooms, and the service was friendly, fast, and welcoming from the moment I walked in.
I ordered a beef steak plate with beans and salad, plus fresh chips and salsa. Everything tasted great — hearty, flavorful, and clearly made fresh. The restaurant was completely full during my visit, which says a lot about the quality and consistency. For a moment I could imagine Billy the Kid himself sitting at the bar with his crew, enjoying the same lively atmosphere.
After eating, I continued exploring Mesilla: the Billy the Kid Gift Shop with its iconic mural, the historic church, and the main plaza. Everything in the area was clean, peaceful, and worth a visit.
If you’re passing through southern New Mexico, La Posta De Mesilla is a must-stop for great food and an authentic Western experience.
