Located just north of I-40 on the Eastside of town, you know it’s going to be good before you even arrive. Anytime your GPS tells you to “turn off the paved road” heading to a restaurant, you know it’s legit. (Ok, the road is paved, but it’s Industrial Road, and there are asphalt millings in the parking lot, and there’s an RV Park…)
Rustlers has a variety of meat on the menu, and everything from sandwiches to poundage available. So I decided to try the best of both worlds, the Big Jake sandwich — sliced brisket, turkey, pulled pork, and a hot link, with pepper jack cheese on toasted sourdough bread. Big is right! Somewhere between a half and a full pound of meat was falling out of my sandwich.
It comes with chips, and there are a slew of sides available, but two words on the menu stopped me in my tracks: cheese curds. When you go, order some, and thank me later.
My food arrived quickly, although the presentation was a little haphazard . At first I was concerned that the dozen or so cheese curds for $6 might have been a little over priced, but then I ate one. Then seven. These things were deep fried chunks of cheese heaven. Definitely worth ordering! The only thing better was dipping them in sauce…speaking of which, it is served “farm style” from what appears to be a giant calf bottle (it’s actually an industrial sauce dispenser). Hot or mild, pile some on. Both are great–thick, nice flavor, with a little lingering heat and a little kick.
The Big Jake was everything it was billed as– a pile of meat on Texas toast size sourdough slices. The sliced brisket was…amazing. Like top three on my list delicious. Moist, great bark, lots of flavor without the sodium overload. Hints of smoke without over powering. While I didn’t get the ribs, I can only imagine how fantastic those must be, if the brisket was an indication.
The pulled pork, smoked turkey and sausage were equally impressive, and while I am not a cheese with BBQ type, the pepper jack worked in this combo. Half a sandwich was enough of a meal, and I did have the beginning stages of meat sweats trying to finish it off. Plan to split a sandwich or take tomorrow’s lunch and dinner home with you.
The service was prompt and friendly, but you’re on your own for refills and such. Not that anyone eating there minded that fact, as we were all lost in meat paradise. And with plenty of seating options, you can go solo or bring a large group and find a place to sit.
They also have a Wagyu Burger on the menu that sounds delicious…and they do pizzas…so it looks like a return trip is in order.
My husband and I shared the platter, it was $43. It came with brisket, ribs, turkey, pulled pork, bologna and polish sausage and 3 sides.
Every single meat was cooked to perfection, tender and perfectly smoked. Honestly, the meat was so flavorful it didnt even need bbq sauce on it, but the BBQ sauce(mild) is our absolute favorite from anywhere.
Our sides were onion rings, beans, and macncheese, and they were all OUTSTANDING.
We really loved just loved the atmosphere and exceptional service as well.
We also love the Butchers Block in Wellston too, its right up there with it for us!. Highly recommended a MUST, no doubt!
