Located just off Skagway’s main tourist strip, 1898 Burger and Shakes is a bit more tucked away — which makes it a nice escape from the crowds. It feels like a bit of a hidden gem, even if the atmosphere is nothing fancy. The space is clean but small and pretty plain, so I’d rate the ambiance 3 out of 5.
The service was great — friendly and helpful staff who made the experience pleasant. I tried the rhubarb shake because it was something unique, but unfortunately, it didn’t work for me at all. It might be a local thing, but I personally wouldn’t recommend it.
The highlight here is definitely the smash burger — two juicy patties with American cheese, grilled onions, pickles, and their house sauce. The flavor was great, but the sauce made it a bit too messy to eat comfortably. Next time, I’d ask for it light or on the side. They also offer a version with salmon, which could be worth trying if you’re feeling adventurous.
Overall, this is a solid stop for a good burger in Skagway without the crowds. Just maybe skip the rhubarb shake.

I got the kids burger- very good! My husband got the burger that had some type of salmon sauce. He said it was really good. Everything was fresh and it was very clean inside. Jacob took our order and had great and friendly customer service. Klondike bikes recommended them after our ride. forgot to take a picture before we started digging in.

This was a fun little burger place that packed a big punch. The double burger and fries we got were insanely good. The burger was super juicy and the bun was able to withstand it even with the dripping cheese. My mouth is still watering from the photos. The fries were a refreshing take from the rest in town with a dash of pepper on top. The special spread that you can opt for was good, however, we did not opt for it on our burgers. Seating was a little tight (3 tables inside) but they do have a fenced in patio out back that we noticed after we ate. The staff was friendly, even with us waiting for them to open. It was worth the wait. The food also came out really quick with no complaints. One of my favorite food choices of the entire trip.

This was an awesome place especially during winter where there is a tendency for places to be closed.
Awesome burger. The service was great I don’t love sauce usually so I opted not to get sauce but the Server gave me some on the side for free to try it and 10/10 was amazing sauce.
Gotta admit these fries where killer loved the like almost pepper flakes on them.
And you gotta try the spruce tip shake!!!

This is a great burger restaurant, a couple blocks off the main street in this historic AK town.
I had the Skagway smash burger..the patties were larger than I expected, they’re consistent with a regular burger (as opposed to smashed). Juicy, the melted cheese is messy, but the sandwich is very good overall.
The special sauce that comes with the fries is excellent. This is a great way to switch things up if you’re looking for a change from the abundant local seafood.

Absolutely DELICIOUS!!! So so happy to have a good smash burger restaurant in town. The Skagway burger had a nice little kick to it with their house sauce, and the fries were nice and crispy. I also tried a rhubarb shake for the first time here- so good!!! It’s especially cool to me because rhubarb has a rich history in Skagway. Will definitely be back to try more of their burgers and shakes (I noticed there was a spruce tip flavored shake, too!). As someone living in Skagway this summer, I can confidently say this place is amazing and is definitely worth the stop by if you’re wanting a good burger on your cruise or vacation while here. The gentleman running it is also very hardworking, gave very fast service, and was checking in with customers on how their food was while also cooking more burgers for more customers. 10/10, heckin good burgers!!!! (Pro tip: If the tables are busy, try taking your burger to the Seven Pastures park across the bridge! It’s a great way to get into nature a bit while enjoying a yummy lunch )

first off, this food was amazing. I ordered a og smash burger, fries, and a strawberry milkshake. the fries were seasoned to perfection and i would be lying if i said this wasn’t the best burger i’ve had in a LONG time. however my biggest complaint with the place is the price. a meal i could get at home for 15-20 ended up costing over 30 dollars. but besides that i have no complaints.
