Solid burger joint. Friendly service. A bit of a gut bomb but that’s to be expected.

If you are hunting for a new burger spot in San Diego that actually lives up to the hype, 858 Burger is a must-visit. Located right in the heart of downtown La Jolla, it has quickly secured a spot in my top 5 burger joints.
The Logistics
Be prepared for the La Jolla hustle. Parking is scarce, so expect to find a spot on the street and walk a bit to the shop. Trust me—the walk is worth it.
The Food
The Milkshake: Do yourself a favor and try not to finish your shake before the food arrives. They are hand-spun and made to order; mine had these incredible chocolate bits mixed in. I accidentally polished off 80% of it while waiting for my burger because it was just that good.
The Fries: These are addictive. The texture and crunch reminded me of a high-end version of Rally’s or Checkers seasoned fries (which I already love), but elevated.
The American Double ($12): Finding a burger of this quality for $12 in La Jolla is a win in itself. The meat was perfectly seasoned, the veggies were crisp, and the sauce was spot on. Most importantly, the bun held its integrity—no sogginess or staleness here. The ratios are dialed in perfectly.
Presentation & Atmosphere
Whether you eat there or take it to go, they care about the details. My burger was carefully wrapped and tucked into its own individual box, keeping the presentation clean. If you stay, they have both indoor and outdoor seating to enjoy the downtown vibe.
Bottom Line: If you’re looking for something new and high-quality, 858 Burger is well worth the drive.

This has to be the most millennial burger place ever. Prices aren’t the worst but still too much for what you get. Flavor is non-existent on the fries & onion rings. The burgers are obviously the money maker. They were decent. With how minimalist this place is, it should have similar prices to IN N Out and not Five Guys. I would come back for the burger, but these prices for what you makes me think twice.

If you’re craving an incredible burger experience, 858 Burger is the place to go! Their American burger, smash style, is my absolute favorite—crispy on the edges, juicy in the middle, and packed with flavor. The dirty fries are addictive, and the corn in a cup is a must-try side that always hits the spot. Beyond the amazing food, the service is fast, friendly, and consistent every time. Highly recommended!

If only the people in the long line for The Taco Stand next door knew how good these smash burgers were, they might think twice about their decision. I would put these burgers above shake shack, which is a high bar. Incredible crust and well balanced. Sweet potato fries were good too!

Worst burger joint I’ve ever been to. The burger was SO small and burnt to a crisp. The fries had no flavor either. We also got Corn in a cup. You would expect grilled corn, but it was clearly microwaved canned corn with the can juice at the bottom. The least they could have done is strain the corn juice out. Overall, this was a horrible experience. Avoid eating here!

I ordered the 858 burger and the dirty fries and they were both delicious, the onion rings are top as well. They have a great selection of things from food and drinks to desserts. You definitely need to try them!
Big plus, they are pet friendly!!

Food is good just don’t get the corn in the cup. They don’t drain the corn so it’s all watery

Super art direction. The staff was friendly and the menu design was simple and easy to understand. Unfortunately, I felt the food didn’t really match the price. 32 dollars for two burgers and a shake and the burgers just were missing the pizzazz that I expected for a 10 dollar burger. It wasn’t bad by any means, but if the menu is going to closely reflect a similar menu to in n out for example, it has to excel in the burger department for the price. The shake was good, but I didn’t feel it was all that special.
