The food was not bad, but very disappointing for the price. French onion soup was very salty and difficult to enjoy, and the crispy pork was not very flavorful. The escargot was fantastic with a delicious garlic butter sauce and perfect texture. The duck cassoulet wasn’t bad, though the duck thighs were a bit dry and overcooked. Similarly, the braised rabbit was slightly tough and overcooked, but palatable. It was cooked with pearl onions in a sauce similar to pot roast. Finally, we ordered some kind of apple bread pudding with a whipped marscapone topping and caramel + vanilla syrup that was alright. Most items were underwhelming, and for a $189 total, I would expect better.

The atmosphere was dark and private in large wooden booths, but the music playing inside the restaurant didn’t match the feeling well. Oddly enough, more fitting soft jazz was playing at the front door, which was replaced by 1980s pop and rock upon entering deeper into the restaurant. Our server, Savannah, was incredible and extremely helpful!

We had a great experience at our stopby in Charleston at this awesome French Restaurant. Cocktails were great. We had filet mignon, cheese fondue, steak tartare and a creme brulee. All of them was perfect. We have been there without reservation but they have taken care with us really nice. Great team was serving. Their manager was so competant, he was visiting all the tables as it should be. Thank you ! Definately Recommended.

Charleston restaurant week is an opportunity to explore the beautiful food scene the city offers for a fair price for everyone. I tasked my wife with choosing the one spot we would try and not tell me. Right off King St we arrived to 39 Rue de Jean. I really didn’t know what to expect. French, a warm atmosphere, normally out of my price range for a normal meal. The door was held open, and we were seated right away because of our Friday night reservation. The staff were very friendly and attentive to anything we needed. The inside was warm and inviting. Brick arches, booths and tables, and warm dim lights. The small tables felt a little too close together, the room needed less tables in total. I could have almost touched someone if I extended both my arms towards the tables next to us. Full menu & restaurant week menu already on the table which I liked. Noise level was moderate, loud enough to have a normal conversation without whispering.

I started with a glass of Pinot Grigio. It was the cheapest glass of wine but it was pleasantly balanced between light and fruity. The waitress wisely said not to be fooled by the price. Warm bread and butter were served, an unbeatable classic. We split the restaurant week menu. Whatever my wife ordered, I ordered the other option. She had the fried goat cheese salad. She said it was good with a light dressing and delicious fried goat cheese topping. The only thing she did not care for was the large beet topping. She found the large slice of beet not to be appetizing or very creative. I had the cup of tomato soup with basil oil. It was delicious and smooth. Perfect to warm you up on a chilly evening.

Next were the entrees. My wife ordered the chicken francaise. I had the shrimp Provençal. We both agreed hers was much better. The beurre blanc was fantastic and went well with all the vegetables. I would come back for that dish. The shrimp was fine, plenty of butter sauce and good portion. Penne pasta was a little overcooked. I wished the shrimp dish had a little more creative flare to it. We both took home leftovers.

I was thrilled that dessert was part of the 3 courses. We don’t skip dessert in my house. We shared the Pot de Creme & White chocolate blueberry cheesecake. I liked both but the cheesecake was the overall winner. Smooth, good crust, and good amount of berry & white chocolate topping. I felt like the pot de creme should have came with ice cream or glass of milk because it was so rich. The cinnamon whipped cream was a great garnish.

Overall we really enjoyed our evening. I would be more than willing to come back for nice meal on a special occasion. Thank you for participating in restaurant week!

We got the Chicken Frances and the Coq au Vin. Unfortunately for the price, we expected the dishes to be a bit more flavorful.
The escargot was however, pretty good, the garlic butter sauce tasted good and balanced out the naturally earthy taste of the snail.

The venue unfortunately was on the back end of renovations, so the air conditioning was not working, so it was a bit uncomfortable and stuffy.

The service was great. Savannah was helpful and knowledgeable, and made every effort to make our visit good!

We had a wonderful dinner for our anniversary and were very happy we chose this restaurant. Our server brought us two glasses of champagne, very cool! Onion soup was fantastic as well as the Caesar salad. Enjoyed the braised chicken and the porterhouse pork chop. Veggies and potatoes were awesome. I highly recommend going here!

Red Curry Mussels – BOMB.
Mussels Provencal – BOMB.

We came for the mussels and they did not disappoint. Lots of flavor, especially in the red curry version. Dip the bread in that jawn too yeeeeehaw.

Duck Cassoulet – Good dish. Mostly savory taste. Not a ton of flavor going on but high quality and well made (tender inside and crispy outside). I’ll probably get a different entree next time.

Our server was great, he helped us with the few questions we had and split our entree (that we were sharing) to two bowls without us asking for that which was nice. I think his name was Chris.

Absolutely incredible. First things first, it was the best steak I’ve ever eaten in my life. I never thought I would be saying that about a strip steak from a French restaurant but here we are. This is what I hope to be served when I visit highly revered steak houses throughout the country, but I’ll always be let down when comparing to 39 Rue de Jean. The Demi-Glacé was absolute perfection. The cook on the steak was slightly above the requested medium rare, but after the first bite I would’ve eaten it well done & not had any complaints. There’s not a chance I’ll be visiting Charleston again without trying the filet. Kudos. The pork belly was delicious as well. A crispy bark on the exterior & melt in your mouth interior. The slaw was bright & paired perfectly, and the sweet potato mash made it all come together nicely. The short rib really lacked in comparison. A bit oily, not as warm as I’d prefer and overall could’ve used more seasoning. The Caesar was good, made traditionally and made fresh, can’t go wrong there. Service was great. Attentive, quick, and friendly. Overall it was a great experience, I’m looking forward to the next visit!

We had dinner after a concert next door. Very nice atmosphere, server was great. Now we come to the food…lamb was outstanding… charcuterie plate was at best lacking, lacking in balance of ingredients, only two or three pieces of bread a pile of pickles, capers and mustard.. don’t order it. My duck was over cooked to the point it was chewy. I order it medium rare and it was more like medium well. They did offer a free dessert, that was nice of them. So bottom line is watch what you order..

Stopped by for dinner on a Monday evening before the Nutcracker Ballet and everything was perfect. Highly recommend the crispy brussel sprouts and the French 75. You won’t be disappointed!
