1789 Restaurant made my birthday unforgettable! From the moment we arrived, they went above and beyond to make it feel special. They created a personalized menu just for me, featuring not only my name but also custom fish substitutions since I don’t eat meat—such a thoughtful touch. The food was absolutely delicious, with each dish perfectly prepared and beautifully presented.
The ambiance was equally remarkable; high-end yet cozy, nestled in a historic townhouse in Georgetown, giving the restaurant a warm, inviting feel. To top off the incredible experience, they surprised me with a dessert and a card at the end of the meal. It’s rare to find a place that combines excellent food, exceptional service, and such personalized attention. I’ll definitely be back!

I had a wonderful experience here a few weeks ago, and I’ve been thinking about it a lot since, so I thought I’d write about it. My spouse and I had family visiting, and we went to 1789 for their final night in town. The food was amazing — every dish was a delight. I also liked the intimate ambiance. Perhaps best of all was the service. The servers had all the professionalism and finesse you’d expect from a high-end restaurant like 1789, while still being warm and welcoming (thank you for laughing at my Dad’s jokes). This was a lovely, memorable evening. I’m sure we’ll be back.

We visited 1789 for Valentine’s Day, as my husband had planned a special dinner for us. The evening started beautifully — we had wonderful service at the bar in Fitzgerald and the ambiance was perfect for a celebration.
Unfortunately, our experience shifted once we were seated for dinner. Our server, Tia, made us feel as though she was consistently trying to upsell — from bottled water to wine — which began to feel uncomfortable. When the bill arrived, my husband noticed that the wine I selected was listed at a price nearly 50% higher than what we had chosen.
We calmly brought this to her attention. She took the bill and walked away, saying under her breath, “I knew this would happen,” which felt dismissive and unsettling. It left us feeling as though we were being treated suspiciously, despite having confirmed the bottle earlier in the evening.
We’ve celebrated important milestones at other DC establishments — our wedding brunch at The Hamilton and special dinners at Clyde’s — and have always felt warmly welcomed. To end our Valentine’s celebration this way was disappointing.
We hope this feedback is received in the spirit it’s intended — not to diminish the restaurant as a whole, but to highlight how small moments in service can meaningfully impact what is meant to be a special occasion.

I recently dined at 1789, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. Our server, Sara, truly stole the show—her knowledge of the menu and wine pairings was impressive, and her cheerful demeanor made us feel welcome and valued. She was incredibly responsive to our needs and went above and beyond to ensure we had a memorable meal.
The sommelier, Nick, was also wonderful, providing excellent wine recommendations that complemented our dishes beautifully.
The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it the perfect backdrop for a fantastic evening. I highly recommend 1789 for anyone looking for outstanding service and a delightful culinary journey.

We really did love our evening. To find a place where the food, atmosphere and service are so strong is rare. Our group of 5 had the venison and Halibut and all were delicously done as were cocktails and desert. The server was totally on mark with her descriptions, presenence and welcoming personality. I also really loved the quiet conversational atmosphere that made the dining feel special and so comfortable. We’ll be back soon.

I’d love to leave this gem of. Restaurant 10 stars! From the moment we walked in the door the hospitality was outstanding! It is a relatively small, quaint, historic atmosphere with nuances that the you back in time to the foundation of our nation. The food was delicious with impeccable presentation. Our entree of Dover Sole was wonderful. But as good as the food was, the service was even better! We enjoyed several wonderful moments with Kyle, our main server, who gave great recommendations. When we left the restaurant, we left knowing we had made a new friend! Steven, the head waiter gave us a wonderful lesson on the building’s history. I look forward to our next visit when the rack of lamb that passed by looking incredibly tasty will be next on my list! This is a must for fine dining in DC!!

A while back, I had such an amazing dining experience here. Absolutely loved the food and the ambience. Every single dish had rich (but not too overwhelming) flavor. The service was good as well.
We’re planning to go back in December and I’m certain that I’ll love it even more.

Amazing food, service is top notch! Tables are a little tight, they open at 5:30 so maybe be the first one to get the best table. We ordered the sea scallops and beet salad for our starters, both are amazing! I ate the beet salad before and forgot to take a picture. Mains were the trout not pictured my husband said it was amazing. I had the halibut and it was also amazing. Dessert we got the baked Alaskan it was so good. I totally forgot to get a picture. However this is our new favorite place!!!!! So good.

The appetizers are good while a little salty. However, their meet plates are disappointing. The steak is too hard, and not juicy. The flavor is odd and doesn’t mix into the beef. And the pork and duck have strange flavor as the meat might not be fresh or cleaned enough. I really think it should be improved as it’s a ‘fancy’ restaurant. It’s below the average level. The sides and vegetables in those plates are way better than the meat. The dessert is ok.

We came here for the Restaurant Week, and we really enjoyed the experience. We ordered lamb bolognese and Thai-style scallops for appetizers, lamb rack and filet mignon for entrees, and orange Bavarian and banana foster for desserts. All of them were pretty good except the orange Bavarian (which was too sweet for me). The service was great. Highly recommend for Restaurant Week!
